The Elite Dangerous Sandbox

Elite Dangerous is a true sandbox environment...

Its basically up to the user on what to do with "the sand". Its all pretty much the same old thing. Pile up the sand, dig up the sand, move it around...

Tired of running the same old missions? Well then try creating your own challenges! (Planetary Circumnavigation anyone?) Move some sand around...

FDEV isn't really doing much with the game. Not really changing the depth/quality of the missions. Sure, they throw a new toy in the sandbox once in a while (T-10), but its really just the same old sandbox after all...

Just adding new sand once in a while doesn't really keep things interesting. Its just the same old sand....

Except, you can't "pile up the sand", move it around, etc.

The problem is that it's a sandbox with half an inch of sand in it. Sure you can make some stuff out of the sand but you are very limited and often can't make what you really want to out of it.

Frontier keeps giving us new toys to play with in the sandbox, but we still don't have enough sand to do much of anything fun and creative.

The forums are becoming more and more irrelevant as time goes on. Far too many apologists making excuses for bad design choices, blaming players who report legitimate bugs for doing something wrong, rather than taking the time to confirm or deny the bug reported, on and on and on.

I actually enjoy playing the game in Solo far more than I do engaging with the ED community as represented on these forums. I know for a fact that the ED community outside of this place is pretty cool, but you wouldn't know it to spend a few hours around here on the typical day.

What we have:

We don’t need ED to be a sandbox at all. Anyone fired up No Man’s Sky recently? I did. Last night. It’s Uber sand boxy now. And still a steaming pile of janky animal dung.

ED needs some hand crafted love. You want space legs? Me too. But only for going eva to do some little repair mini game type stuff. As was shown in the ED concept art book.

Want atmospheric landing? Me too but just for eye candy while on route to a base. I don’t want Elite Mans Sky where we get half baked manure.

Maybe just the ability to fly through clouds and see some lush vegetation and oceans. But I don’t want them to make the entire planets explorable because it would just ruin the illusion.

If we're being honest that second sand castle isn't too bad. It's fully formed, functional, no real holes. As such it isn't really a good representation of what we have. I would try to present an example of what my opinion of the game is but I am not sure there is such a picture. To be fair there is a lot of good things in elite. Too many to just riff off. To be equally fair there are a lot of bad things as well. My biggest issue at the moment though, and I am repeating myself here, is the contempt for anyone trying to bring up a dissenting opinion. The piling on and making fun of people hoping to contribute to making the game better is outright depressing.

Ultimately though there needs to be a light at the end of the grind tunnel. So maybe my picture would be a series of increasingly larger sand castles that lead to an actual castle with a really fun party going where you can engage in different activities without the need to grind anymore.

Yeah no such picture of that I am afraid.

Detail, depth of design, true teamwork enabled, a strong foundation and more than just a sand castle... Versus something that just adequately works as a sand castle on the beach, more like a sand outpost really, and something anyone can do at the age of 8 with a bit of filling up and dumping. Think about it.

Oh I agree with you, my position is that Elite isn't even a sand outpost right now.

Well, I try to make it a habit of not completely dismissing all of their work. I was here on release, a lot has been done, just not all to the effect that is really desired.

Elite Dangerous isn't a sandbox, it's a beautifully crafted tightly locked down galaxy with hamster wheels scattered around it. The only user manipulatable thing is the BGS which changes nothing in the gameworld.

Sure it does, it shuffles around factions that have no compelling reason to care about them. [hehe] Or... Or it creates outlier Boom States that get posted on Youtube and reported on the forums for immediate nerfage. Those are things. [noob]
