[COMPETITION] The Elite Dangerous Scavenger Hunt 2014
Welcome Commanders,
Roll up, roll up! Come and take part in the extravaganza that is... The Elite Dangerous Scavenger Hunt 2014!
Scavenger hunt, you say?
Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting puzzles for you to solve. Each day will see a new puzzle, and each will have a solution that you’ll need to keep a log of. At the end of the hunt those solutions will combine for a grand finale. On the last day I’ll give you 24 hours to submit the answer by email, and then the winner will be chosen by random.org’s wizardry.
I won’t tell you how many clues there will be, as that may provide an extra hint to some. On the hunt you’ll have to use a range of tools to aid you. Your brain will help (hopefully), but so will the internet, Google Maps, info given out on the Forums/Newsletters, even the previous Elite games. There are numbers involved, so I’ll throw a little maths at you but trust me, if I can do it so can you!
There will be a winner, so what does the winning winner win?
The winner, chosen at random from all those submitting a correct final answer, will receive the following fantabulous prizes:
Elite Dangerous Stein
Celebrate with a cold beverage of your choice after a magnificent space battle, toast your success after sneaking through a police blockade with your cargo hold full of narcotics, or for finally making a profit on the 10 tons of Riedquat Smegberries you’ve been stuck with. Just don’t drink and fly, Commander!
Elite Dangerous Commander’s Log Book
Keep a note of all your profitable trade routes, discoveries beyond the frontier, asteroids rich with ore, favourite bars, bounties, or whatever else you might need.
Elite Dangerous Playing Cards
Kick back in your cockpit with a game of solitaire while you wait for docking permission, or earn the contempt of your crew by taking all their money at Tionisla Hold ‘em Five Dimensional Poker.
As well as some non-Elite related booty, just for fun:
Nerf N-Strike Elite Strongarm Blaster
We're all big kids at heart, plus everyone knows that the most effective way to take out a Thargoid is with a polyurethane foam bullet (and it even has Elite in its name!)
The Star Wars Trilogy John Williams Soundtrack
What better way to get your Class 1 Hyperdrive running.
A Selection of Books
The official fiction will be plenty to keep you going, but here are a couple of extras just in case. Maybe their topics will even help you in whatever Elite Dangerous career you pursue.
Thanks
What you see at the top of the list are some unique Elite Dangerous goodies. Frontier have been very generous and allowed me to use the ED logo so I can have these made. Which means I can assure you that, as far as I’m aware, only one of each of these items exist in all known universes (I haven’t even had any made for myself, they are genuinely one of a kind). The winner will be a very lucky commander! I’d like to thank Ashley Barley for his time and Frontier Development for letting me use their logo.
After seeing Mobius and Psykokow’s competition disclaimer, I thought it’d be a good idea to pre-emptively answer a few questions too, just in case:
Can I have the cash alternative, instead of the prizes?
Err... no
I’d rather not give you my address
I understand the desire for privacy, but it makes if difficult to get your prizes to you. I’ll hopefully be attending Lavecon in Kettering, Fantasticon in Hull, and hopefully an unofficial launch party. So if you’re going to one of those too and don’t mind waiting, I can bring them to you.
Why are you doing this?
Because I think Elite is awesome, and the community that has built up around it is just as awesome. Others make incredible artwork, interesting websites, hilarious podcasts, exciting audio-dramas and loads more. I’m not that talented, so this is my way of giving something back.
Are you wanting anything in return, entry fees, p&p etc?
Nope, nada, zip, zero, zilch. I don’t want anything at all.
