The Elite Legendary ship ?

In the original Elite there were many reports of a strange ship in deep deep space that was unbeatable and looked quite strange...Almost as if the computer had configured it itself...

I remember in a mag they chased up reports and asked about it....Whether it was Mr Braben or Mr Bell im not sure but the answer was they had no idea about this strange ship...

Does anyone remember this ?

Dunno why I suddenly remembered this but just thought I would ask

yeah I remember hearing rumours about that, though I could just be thinking of the generation ship that I never come across.

From what I've read they were literally squeezing every available byte out of the code for the original, so I doubt they would have put something in that so few people would (evidently) encounter.

The Constrictor? I think it was in the C64 version. It was a prototype military ship that had been stolen, your mission was to seek-locate-destroy.

Generation ships were mentioned in the player guide but were never in the game as far as I know.

I think this was it alright. In the Amiga version of Elite, you took out the Constrictor and it dropped a cloaking device as I remember.

Yeah I did this mission.

And on the Speccy, you got the seven special missions on there also, the supernova etc.

I have several magazine clipings, reviews, original averts, etc from "The Micro user" covering Elite. None mention it. So I don't think it was in the original BBC or Master version.

I distinctly remember playing Elite on a ZX Spectrum, many years ago, with two friends from school. We were using his Spectrum+ and massive huge colour television (my own machine at that time was a 48K with a teeny B&W set) and being utterly wowed.

We each took turns at the controls and flew around various systems, and at some point after a jump, there was a huge triangle on the screen. It moved as the ship did, but broke up into zig-zags, and if I remember right it broke down into two lines as we tried to approach.

We were all incredibly excited and thought we had finally found some legendary thing.

Of course those two lines never moved again, and neither did our ship. Eventually we had to press the reset button, and no matter how hard we tried - none of us ever saw anything like that again :(

I remember the Constrictor mission and have vague memories of the Mirage, can't say I've heard of the Cougar or if I ever did I can't remember anything about it! I like rumours and myths I'm hoping that ED will have several hidden out in deep space for explorers to stumble across. Wrecked ships of unknown origin, ships that have advanced tech that isn't available to the general populous. That kind of thing.

I think the Cougar only appeared in BBC Master Elite - but it fits the description.

Master Cody, you know I encountered this legendary ship more than once. It would mass-lock the jump drive but did not appear on the scanner. It only attacked when it was attacked. It was not a cloaked ship. Murgh's Old Ships Oolite OXP has a model of the Cat which is exactly what I saw playing Elite on the Commodore 64.

Go look for the Mirage :)

Yeah - wasn't this from Frontier: Elite II?

Was supposed to be a fantastic ship that you could earn by completing a mission out on the "edge of the galaxy"...

Made it into folklore so much that it was added to a Hints & Tips book that was sold commercially

I have a copy... ...somewhere...
