General / Off-Topic The Elite parenting thread

Rather than make new threads every time I want to draw on the experience of more seasoned fathers and mothers, I thought I'd start one and keep posting in it when I need to. It can also be used for venting purposes should someone wish to let lose their parental frustrations without having to create a mumsnet account.

My youngen has a mosquito bite, but it looks like a bruise. Right in the center of the bite you can see the tiny raised yellowish/whitish wound where the critter got him, and for about 15mm radius around that it's gone a reddy/purpley mottled shade. It's not a serious issue as far as an infection or anything is concerned, but it's an understatement to say he is not happy about it. Does anyone have any experience in soothing infant thargoid bites on infant humans?

This heatwave is really doing his head in as well. We've got an air-purifier blasting out air at him just to get him to sleep. Roll on winter.

Pop to the Pharmacy and see if they have any sting relief cream or spray.

Got one from Boots which cools and soothes the skin and works well.

And remember... Calpol cures 99.9999999999% of everything. :D

I am always available for parenting advice, pretty much do the complete opposite of what I suggest and you'll be fine...

I have teenagers....

Vinegar...cheap alternative to the chemist and very effective at killing the sting, although it will make yer little one cry...a lot.

Also, calpol as TJ suggests...its the miracle drug fer kids and cures the mind more than what its supposed to cure. Almost like a placebo effect.

Mine is a teenager now...a teenage girl with aspergers and a hard and heavy puberty to deal with. She starts her new buddy program the education authority have setup for her...18 months on the waiting list and its finally happening, starting tomorrow...8 week course by people who are properly trained in dealing with autistic kids...a very rare luxury fer us.

Shes busy making a little picture frame for her mum as next month is the 8th anniversary of her departing. She was a bit down but this buddy system has picked her up a lot...Im hoping it doesnt fall through again due to lack of funding...the dissappointment the last two times we had false starts sent her into month long depressions so we literally counting down the hours and nervously watching and waiting fer the dreaded phone call.

Really doesnt get easier as they get older...the stress just grows with them ^

That sounds way bigger than a mosquito bite should be.
I've seen thousands of those bites, and have also never seen that central area you describe, from a mosquito. Could it be a wasp or bee sting?

We treat mosquito bites with Zinc Oxide in castor oil cream, which you should probably already have as part of the changing kit. The cream has a waterproofing effect, and prevents napkin rash in hot conditions. It's a useful all purpose emollient for scrapes and minor burns too.

He's still on booby milk and his mum takes an immunosuppressant (azathioprine) due to Crohn's, which gets through to him. As a consequence his inflammatory responses are still a bit out of the ordinary. This is actually creating a minor problem about when to give him the MMR vaccine. We're probably going to delay that until he is mostly on solids, so he'll be getting it about 10 or 11 months later than normal.

We've got some of that zinc stuff for nappy rash but I didn't know it'd work on bites. I slapped some on after I read your post and he definitely seemed to feel better about things.

Thanks for the tips dads!

We use Brulidine for most things skin related:

My daughter started talking early.

One night, when doing the 3am feed, I was channel flipping in a zombie stupor. Suddenly, she spat out the nipple and swallowed excitedly, reaching out to the TV.

"Boobies!" she said.

I became awake, but by then had already switched channels.

"Boobies! Come back!" she said.

Sometimes a man with a bottle is just no substitute.

My little buddy has recently started solids.

I don't think either me or his mother were prepared for how nerve-wracking the first few solid meals would be for us. Every single little *cough cough* had us reaching for the "how to stop your baby from death by choking" handbook.

Now we're used to it, and mealtimes have turned into a food-fight with a post-dinner time carpet cleaning extravaganza.

Fun times.

What goes in will have to exit through the other end. I remember well what happened shortly after jasmine moved onto solids...I wont spoil the surprise fuzzy, but lets just say the memories stay with ye to the grave.

Might wanna start thinking wooden floors and those scented bin liners...just sayin ^
