The Elite Pilot's Essential Tool: Pen and Paper

FDev have done sterling work since the release with patches and updates, but I'd like to ask for a few Quality-Of-Life additions...

The fact is, I can't pilot my spaceship in the year 3000-odd without a pen and paper - and that seems ridiculous! A lot of these
are along the lines of a 'Commanders Log' that has been suggested elsewhere, but to re-iterate:

  • I don't want to have to write down that obscure system name from the mission description so that I can type it into the Galaxy Map, I want options to target it and plot a route directly. I would be good if this worked both pre- and post- mission for both the mission target system and the mission source system, so I can easily travel to my 'target' and return for my 'reward'. What would also be really handy would be if I didn't have to go to the map at all. Some missions you might not take depending on how far away the target system is - if you could, say, hover over the system name in the mission description and have the nav computer tell you how far away it is in a popup that would be awesome (but might be asking too much!)
  • I don't want to have to type the same searches into the Galaxy Map over and over, I want it to save recent searches and allow me to pick from them (maybe even have some 'Favourites'?)
  • I'd like an easy way to review a plotted route listing system names, jump distances and totals - that way I can look out for jumps that might stretch my fuel reserves, and more easily compare alternative routes (e.g. number of jumps etc.)
  • I also like an in-game way to record trade notes, especially if system names in my notes could be hyperlinked to the nav computer. An automated travel-log would do, listing the last few systems I'd been to and any trade activity in those systems (e.g., ...jumped to Sol, sold 10t of Toxic waste for xxx cr/t, bought 5t Narcotics for yyy cr/t). Some space for personal notes would be good too (like where to find Black Markets etc.)

I'm sure its all been suggested before, but it would definitely make the game more cohesive for me - jotting stuff in my notepad just seems so un-space-commandery :D

Cheers!

Have a look at my BPC - it tells you how far a system is away in the dashboard, and lets you enter notes per system/station. Plus has crowdsourced commod prices. :)

I just thought of possible bit of silly in-game tom-foolery - that might actually be a bit useful and/or interesting - how about occasional 'sponsored' links in your nav computer?

"Do you like smuggling brandy and fending off pirates? Why not visit Lave for an exciting fun-packed, laser-dodging holiday?"

I have checked out your tool Slopey, its great....but a lot of that should be in the game already! ;)

I haven't seen latest version of it, but during Beta testing I found it a really handy resource.
The game now has a decent auto-navigator mechanism (not going to put Tom-Tom/Garmin out of business any time soon :D )
and a guide in the write-ups of the main goods traded.

I keep a spreadsheet along side me that I fill in with trade data and some other notes regarding services available, SC distances and such (separate computer and screen so it's a bit easier)

Slopey, your BMP tool is great, but I like to do it the hard way ;)

and to Kyudos. Like your idea for random 'silly' adverts.

I haven't tried Slopey's tool yet, but this game really needs a (partially automated with manual notekeeping ability) CMDR's log. There is a lot of traveling in ED and I can think of nothing better than keeping a log. Having to keep notes in a txt file breaks immersion. Opening up your log and looking at past adventures or noting a thought down as you travel between stars... things like that really help immerse players in the game world.
