The Empire and the Disregard of the London Treaty

PREFACE: This is not a topic for Superpower bashing. This is a topic meant to discuss future gameplay based on news articles and poke at some of the storytelling itself. Mods feel free to hammer anyone who starts up Fed vs. Imp arguments.

And now for something... completely different.

The last time an article like this caught my attention, I made some speculations on future gameplay elements based on said news article.

And holy hell was I proven right. Ship transfer, upgraded route plotters, I knew these were coming but White Dwarf and Neutron Star boosts? Did not see that coming. Possible inclusion of micro warps between stars in a system in the future? Goddamn Meta-Drive was busy.

Cut to, Oct 21st.

Yet ANOTHER mention of the London Treaty. This time, a well known character in Elite Dangerous lore commenting on it. Imperial High Admiral Denton Patreus ignites a fireball by declaring Imperial withdrawal of the Treaty which was meant to limit the size and scale of ships to prevent scaling upwards to full Imperial Class Super Star Destroyers and Death Stars of the sort. I wouldn't be surprised if the Federation quickly follows suit in order to 'protect' themselves and Manhon reluctantly does so due to the panic of Alliance citizens and Naval Personnel.

Which brings me to my first point of order and the question of the day to ask.

"What does this mean for future Gameplay?"

We known the London Treaty was established to ensure the Superpowers would not start building bigger and more powerful ships. By imposing a limit, they would be able to limit the wild arms race to increasingly destructive weapons in favor of refining what was outline for precision work and to establish a sense of stability.

So the capital ships as we known them are effectively the biggest ships in the game.

Now that Patreus has disrupted the balance and declared the Empire will start disregarding the treaty in favor of building bigger ships (and a LOT of them) it's possible we might see ships even bigger then our current two heavy hitters.

Which means in the future, we may be able to get our hands on the now defunct and outclassed Farraguts and Interceptors to pilot ourselves in some capacity. Whether we can own them on an individual basis or they serve as mobile bases for groups and multiplayer reasons. I'm hoping for the former.

One unique prospect that may interest Alliance Supporters is the implications this story has for the Alliance. They've been watching carefully and with the Empire's aggression being taken to higher lengths. They may feel the need to respond to both the Empire's and Federations subsequent buildup by constructing their own capital ships as deterrents.

Which may mean we may see the introduction of Alliance Navy ranking and unique ships to the Alliance Navy itself.

But wouldn't that require a revamp of how the Naval Progression system works?

Yes and that's something FDev has said they want to change at some point. This could be a hint that said revamp is in the works now.

Now onto the second Point of Order and this is more of a personal grievance but a valid question.

Where the HELL is Arissa Lavengy-Duval?

Yes I realize that Patreus is a Senator and that affords him a broad range of power. Especially as High Admiral but the level he's playing at with his declaration strikes me as a decision that could and should only be made by the Emperor. The Emperor has absolute Authority and the ramifications of this decision is something that affects the Empire as a whole and how they are viewed by the Galaxy at Large. This could make them a lot of enemies and it's possible it may even cause internal strife and Civil War.

That is the Duty of the Emperor. Not a Senator. If I were ALD, I'd consider this a huge overstep in authority and at best, would strip Patreus of everything. Status, assets, authority. The whole thing.

At worst I'd exorcise my right to execute him myself ON THE SPOT. (This is a right afforded to all Senators and the Emperor as they hold the powers of High Court/Justice.)

This is just me though.

However, Arissa has been strangely absent from the Galactic scene since her coronation. As far as I can tell, she hasn't appeared in Galnet since.

Hudson and Manhon at the very least have been making appearances and putting on some kind of show as the respective Head of State of their respective Superpowers. ALD is just... not there.

Makes me wish Frontier would drop everything and hotfix in Space Legs now so I can go check on the Imperial Capital and see if ALD is even still among the living.

There's a dead rat stinking up the Empire and I'm curious where it is with this declaration.

That's everything I've got for now. Thoughts on this article and what it means for future gameplay?

Discuss.

It means lots of untapped potential will go to waste.

We have the makings of hundreds, if not thousands of hours of BGS/PP-based interactive story told though missions and CG's that will not be utilized to their fullest.

We could see a blockade of Imperial system by the Federation, where once legal cargo in Federation border systems is now flagged Illegal.
But I'll wager we won't.

We could see Assassination missions on both sides, Passenger Transport Missions for key figures looking for better places to hide out, CG's for Capital Ship materials in the Empire, CG's for combat ships in the Federation, and a very quiet buildup of Alliance support and materials as they position themselves to displace both the Federation and the Empire.

And then we may get blindsided by alien invaders from the 5th dimension while everyone's attention is focused on a roiling shyte-storm, only to see the Empire rise to the occasion due to their foresight to disregard this treaty, stockpile the Capital Ships that proved the deciding factor in a spectacular battle - but I'm banking that we won't see any of this come to bare. And it's a shame, really, because the Elite universe could be so much more alive with intrigue and interactivity. But it's just not there yet. The focus seems elsewhere, on things we know little about, on constant balancing of things that work, and efforts to do anything with things that don't.

As for Arissa? I know where she is. With her growing debts, she's sold herself into Imperial Slavery and is working off her debts emptying the wizz-buckets on my ship.

Damn it, Arissa, I told you to hold the bucket still!

Empire building a devastating super-weapon in defiance of convention? Does it come with exhaust ports?

OP - nice bit of story speculation...

Since there has been no backtracking, can we assume that ALD is on-board with the statement & intent?

This kind of controversy is one of those things where "Assuming" can make an "   " out of "u" and "me". I really would expect some sort of statement to confirm or deny this.

Otherwise she looks weak letting a lowly Senator make a critical decision that could potentially destroy the Empire from without and within PROVIDED the Empire is in a position to make a move and is confident they can back it up. ALD would just be a figurehead while Patreus is the real power in the Empire. This makes the Senate look bad as well because it was the Senate that put Arissa on the Imperial Throne.

So everyone in high power starts looking bad. Citizens will begin to question their leaders and cue the Revolution. A prime time to strike for the Federation or even the Emperor's Dawn if they're still out there.

Even if Arissa agrees, a statement as such would speak volumes in being decisive and make her appear confident in the decisions made by her subordinates. Overall strengthening the confidence of Imperial Citizens in their leadership and making them more prepared to fight for the Empire. Which then would allow the Empire to actually back up Patreus's claim.

Silence may be golden but it's not always the best answer.

Maybe this is playing out this way because of how well the Imperial capital ships CG went relative to the Federal one?

Doubtful. All three succeeded well to my knowledge. The Empire built up their Navy in response to Federation expansion and then doubled it in response to the Federation's Response.

So the Empire built six ships in response to the Federation Naval movement and response of three ships.

To be fair, 2 Majestics to 1 Farragut seems balanced

ADL has been in Galnet commenting on the crashed Alien ship and Lorens Trail so not dead.
Patreus might be pushing her policy.

Might be a way in renegotiating the Treaty limits by the De Facto argument.
And a away to bring focus to the new dry docks with Capital ships you can find outside some stations

With this perspective, is it too late for ALD to do anything that might be considered pro-active? It's difficult to see too many good outcomes. 'Failed coup' and 'inter-stellar conflict' book-end the possible narratives, with little more than a 'period of heightened military tension' to separate them.

Are Majestics as wimpy as they look? Or are you just saying that the Empire out performing the Federation is SOP?

London Treaty said Tonnage limits
The Magestics are shorter, thinner and have the open space of the Habitat Ring vs the Farragut, so there it might not be 2:1 but I'd say the Farragut out masses the Majestic by a meaningful amount.

Biggest ship? No.
Biggest offensive ship? Maybe.

I think that huge structures/ships are allowed but a weapon capacity must be reached.

so an alliance armada or small group of thargoids scout ships could in theory take down some of the imperial capital ships with overwealming numbers
