The Empire & Classical Rome

Oh, we know all about British recalcitrance over here... :p

Interesting, you may have misinterpreted me slightly in that then.

What I cited as an example was the amount of perceived influence the decision made by one government has over another. Choices made in Germany affect the United Kingdom but do not necessarily mean United Kingdom will make the same choice.

What I wasn't implying was any preference. My view of the "recalcitrance" in this country tends to be that it is more of a grandstand from politicians and/or media organisations. The positive elements of European integration tend to go unnoticed and unreported.

Did not mean to call you out like that or judge you in anything. It was more of a joke than anything else, though my jibe obviously gave away the direction in which I was thinking and the fact that I'm as much a victim of news media colouring as anyone else. "Oh, a British guy talking about EU integration. He must want out."

The principle of subsidiarity is a general principle of European Union governance, though. So choices made by the government of Germany outside the competences of the EU should, in fact, have no undue influence on the UK. I think, again, the thing to take away from all this is that the EU is not nearly as monolithic as it appears from the outside.

Which if you apply the same correlation to your original point about Rome and the Empire Faction in Elite Dangerous, I think you have a my argument in a nutshell. :D

Wow, even managed to get back on topic... and everything...;)

Yes, like I acknowledged in the first post, I realize that it's kind of early to be breaking out the tissue paper, and I'm perfectly fine with waiting to see what eventually in store for us. It's not like I have much of a choice in the matter anyway. I was just a bit concerned about the Empire's well-established peerage being changed for the social strata of classical Rome, or so it seems, and wanted to know other people's opinions on it.

I guess what I'm trying to say, bring back the peerage and I'm happy. :D

An interesting comparison would be a recent discussion that I had with John Harper, Writer of "And Here The Wheel". we were talking about the comparison between the Alliance and the European Union. As a UK citizen, I have a very different perception of what this means, compared to John, who lives in New Zealand. His image of the EU was much more united than my experience of it has been through my life. So, I think it is worth holding fire until more clues are released from the designers.

Was this part of an interview? I think I'd remember an interesting discussion like that if I'd seen or heard it. I was thinking of aligning myself with the Alliance as they seem the freest of the regimes.

As for clichés in space, this is just a game. They are a quick and easy way to describe situations. I don't expect my space pirates to have eye patches and parrots on their shoulders, but I do expect them to be unkempt drunkards with a disrespect for authority. I also expect my Imperials to speak in clipped Galactic Standard, and to turn their noses up at anyone they consider inferior to them.
