Engineers The Engineers - turning us into criminals?

The engineers trailer was good but I just did not think it captured the real spirit of the engineers update.
So I present my version……

HOW FAR ARE YOU WILLING TO GO?

"Hears what I know…
These engineers they make things work … better …. Faster drivers … stronger shields, enhanced weapons.
Of course you will have to find them first, earn their trust.
And they are going to want something in turn --- tech.
But the real question is…………….. how far are YOU willing to go get an edge?
Are you going to just hope for the best in stumbling across what the engineers need to give your ship the edge? Being left behind by the competition? The galaxy?
Or will you do whatever is needed.
Sabotage?
Stealing?
…………………………murder?
How far will you go?

The Engineers…
Coming to xbox soon."

I've already killed more than 10 T7, Hauler and T6 trying to get those Mechanical Components for FSD and I will do so again when I want to upgrade my Shield Generator. So yes, I'm now a criminal because I've never done it to NPC before. I could still hear them pleading for their lives.

you can get all the materials/commodities in a legal way, if you want.

trade ship materials: there are lots of T9s fighting in combat zones for example, or go hunt criminal (wanted) cargo ships

so you dont have to be a criminal, but yes, you will need to do combat it seems...

I kill wanteds. Any ship type seem to drop materials so far.

You need to destroy certain category of ships for different components. So if you kill only pirates, you'll have a lot of materials, but they'll all be of the same few types.

Anyhow, I can confirm Engineers turning us into criminals... I mostly need stuff from Haulage vessels to get the upgrades I want, and while I normally get wanted ones, I did randomly end up seeing a Convoy Dispersal signal source with low threat in an unhabited (thus anarchy) system...

It was full of Adders and Asp Explorers talking about how they are "Going where few have gone before". I took on an Adder, and score! It dropped the type of components I want, so I destroyed a few more, as well as two Asp Explorers. I did end up with a small stockpile of items that will go directly in my upgrade plans, but...

While I'm not a "criminal" now officially because it's been in Anarchy system (thus legal), I feel bad about having attacking innocent explorers just for materials, even if they are only NPCs...

Indeed, and it is not like it is that much harder, and you get the bounty on top

Want to avoid Combat entirely

Missions give you materials and data of all kinds

Encoded and Diminishing Signal sources often have all kinds of materials and Data beacons to scan

The rest can be obtained passively scanning ships

'Pirates' aren't a ship type though. Which is kind of the point.

Any kind of NPC can be 'wanted' if it belongs to the wrong faction in a system that the local authorities consider is a valid target. This includes having wanted trading vessels that belong to local system factions that simply 'picked the wrong side'.

Heck some legitimate established factions in a system are even criminal organisations that have members flying in system in all sorts of ships with juicy bounties on their head because the controlling faction is more 'civilised'.

That's just how local system legality works in Elite Dangerous. You don't actually need to be a outlaw or some mass murdering pirate in a combat ship to be wanted by the local authorities... you just need to be part of a group that is considered undesirable by whoever holds influence over the area.

If you want to farm components you can definitely pick a appropriate area and you'll find 'trading ships' that are wanted. Or you can always just do something else and drop into wreck sites and the like for a random assortment of components whilst you do other activities with no upfront combat strings attached.
