So, when I moved over to the Empire side (mainly because I want to get a clipper at some point), in order to level up in the ranks, I was given a black flag operation assignment to kill civilians in Empire space in order to make the citizens beg for Empire military intervention. Is this common in the other factions as well or have I joined the baddies?

By the way, not only have I leveled up to "Squire", I now have a huge bounty in Capital Empire territory. lol

Happens with Fed missions too. You have to bare in mind although the minor faction is aligned to the major faction they are still their own entity. You are totally at liberty to not take them though, your decision entirely.

Happens with Fed missions too. You have to bare in mind although the minor faction is aligned to the major faction they are still their own entity. You are totally at liberty to not take them though, your decision entirely.

So are you saying that the Imperial Navy is just a minor faction? I would think it would be the main extension of the primary faction's enforcement arm.

"The Spark" Mission is a bit like this, normally aimed at a local police force. But often seen it listing traders, which I will not do.

But does seem to be a lot more kill missions in the Empire, compared to when ranking up in federation.

Sorry didn't see you said it was an actual ascension mission. Either way as has been pointed out you don't have to do them, if you don't like that ascension mission wait for a less "psychotic" one It will keep spitting out new ascension missions each time you log in until you have gained that rank.
