General / Off-Topic The Expanse. TV space opera done right. (On UK Netflix)

Couldn't see another thread so...

If you've not seen The Expanse it's now on UK Netflix (plus some other I think).

It's a space opera set in a colonised solar system, with tensions rising between Earth, Mars and the asteroid belt. It's great and probably the hardest space scifi to ever grace TV.

Might take a few episodes to get going, but it's great when it does. Thoroughly recommend.

(I've not read the books, but the authors are heavily involved with the show. They do chop and change a fair amount)

Can't quite remember, but I think I've seen a bit of one episode where somebody used magnetic boots to walk in some wrecked ship. And I though it looked like what we might get in ED) I can be wrong, maybe different show.

They do used mag boots a bit. They do have a fair amount of moving about in zero g too, especially for a TV show. The ships are also vertical, so they have 'gravity' under acceleration.

It's a great show. I found it a bit slow going until around episode 6 (it was still interesting) but from then on it really ramped up. Looking forward to season 2 next year.

I was skeptical, at first, mostly because sci-fi on SyFy has generally been a joke for some time now. More paranormal drivel than gritty space operas.

However, I was pleasantly surprised. Took the wife a few episodes but she caught on to it, as well. Great show, though I reserve some criticism for a couple casting choices and costuming. Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone who has be waiting patiently for a space opera (I can only watch so much TNG and BSG).

Yep, found it to be a great series. I'd been in the mood for a good sci-fi series in a while and this one definitely scratched the itch.

I love this series. I started watching it recently and not only does it have a really good story but the lore feels like it could have been right in the Elite galaxy time line, prior to hyperspace technology discovery. So much of the theme feels like Elite.

I'd recommend this to everyone who loves Elite.

I'm currently reading the book (Leviathan wakes - James S A Corey). A very gripping read. Similar to an Iain M Banks culture novel, but not as high tech. Interestingly there are multiple ED-style references (point defence, railguns, heat sinks).

It is good, it appeared around the time the mysterious S6/S7 ships appeared in ED, and around when we started seeing Empire capital ships being stationed in key systems. It felt like some people at Frontier may have been watching the show.

What I found rubbish about The Expanse was that just as it started to get into its stride, it was "season over come back in 12 months lolz!". =/

Season 2 should now be due soon(ish) I think.

I love the title sequence to the first series! Wish there was a full version to the music!

This trailer for series two also looks pretty good! Seems to be a Spanish version.
