Since bad reviews and "I quit" posts always peak just after a version release, and good reviews and increased player numbers come in the gap between releases, Frontier have moved to a policy of releasing less often so that we enjoy the game more.
To be fair, it's a combination for the "i quit" posts.
First, it's not the update people *want* - yes we all want the next update to magically deliver walking around ships/stations/planets-with-atmoshper/hunt dinosaurs (and there will be arguement over which one of those MUST come first).
The updates we have gotten, such as CQC was some high-level planning.
We saw the ship launched fighters back before GDC 2015.
So they were working on assets, and gameplay waaay back then.
CQC was an offshoot that allowed to stress test the game on the Xbox, the control systems and intince the Xbox players into the game.
CQC was a great sucess for the company, considering all that hard work now folds back neatley into the main game.
So they got to update 2 products, stress test, free advertising, with one project called CQC.
That's some high-level smarts.
Powerplay, as game mechanics go was some extra grind, some extra carrots for the players.
But the underying Politics, back stories, updates to the background-sim and how the bubble functions - are in invaluble and integral part of the fabric of the game.
Even if the "game-mechanic" didn't fair too well, PP underlying requirement to Elite Dangerous story is paramount.
1.4 and 1.5 what were "they" about, ships and tweaking the mining? I can't remember.
So much has gone into the game from 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2
The amount of fresh licks of paint, here and there, creature comforts, as well as the headline features.....
