The extreme of the extremes

Gday,

Im on my way out to Livingstone Point/ Shakletons Star. Im wondering what is the highest/lowest anyone has gone from the plane when at the extremities? Id like to look down on the galaxy from the edge. Im wondering if we could see a galactic arm? It would have to be at least 1000ly up/down.

Has anyone tried something like this?

Given the shape of the galaxy, I'd be very surprised if you could reach 1000 Ly up or down when out on the rim. It would be interesting to know how much you can reach. I also suspect that to see the shape of the galaxy clearly from that position, you'd need a lot more than 1000 Ly.

Depends how you define "extremities". I've been to Ishum's Reach, but to find a system 1000 above the plane out that way it's several kylies south of it before there is one. I've also been to the Western and Eastern rims - not as far as Allitnil and others but certainly where you "run out" of stars - and the extremities are pretty much exactly on the Galactic Plane, give or take a few lys.

Like Rhea said, you'd have to be a lot higher. And a lot further out than it's possible to get.

I got to about +650 and -740 close to Shackleton's Star (at about 16,500 south and a couple of hundred LY from the actual edge). To be honest, it wasn't really possible to tell that I wasn't on the plane itself - I must have been unimpressed because it appears I didn't bother to take a screenshot!

Looks like it might be possible to get close to +/- 1000 another couple of hundred LY or so further in but I suspect that this far out from the centre you would need to be more like +/- 2,000 to really get any impression of the closer galactic arms - don't expect to be able to see the further ones at all.

It's a difficult one, I think out near the Formidine Rift you can only get about 500-600LY above the galactic plane.... honestly that's the only "extremity" I've tried, and I only managed about 400LY without having to use jumponium.

Thanks everyone, I guess I'd just like to see the void between two arms from above. Has anyone done that?

<spoiler alert!!!>

From the centre it looks like a huge off-white disc.
