Can somebody direct me towards a section where the factions are described? I have no idea now where the Alliance or the empire stand for etc. In case I want to choose a faction, or rather stay independant.

Your timing is excellent, the factions (Federation; Alliance; Empire) were just discussed in a recent episode on Lave Radio (podcast) Number 38. You can find their excellent Elite Dangerous themed podcast via ITunes and Stitcher (I think).
