The Father's Log... ...Blown Away!

Ok, so I have had this game less then 24 hours. I am not good at gaming in terms of Elite Skills, but I enjoy it.

Thanks to a recommendation in another thread I am playing this with a Thrustmaster Hotas X.

The first few hours I messed around learning how to fly badly messing around outside the start station and crashing, breaking the ship and generally dying. Then I learnt how to dock, how to take off and do very basic things. I have played Elite before when it was all black and white and keyboards only, I sort of know what I am doing somehow.

It was time to play the game...

Day 1
I decide that I will do a simple mission when I docked, I was to take some Leather to a system two jumps away according to the map. Easy, yes ?

Well I take the cargo and leave the station and just floor the engines so that the station becomes a distant speck and figure the maps out. Finally I can get to the next point on the journey.

I find the Hyperspace button, it's called something else now. It finally works when I put my landing gear away and jesus, I was blown away...

...the sound and graphics are amazing, the effects are incredible and I honestly felt like I was in the Battlestar G. universe that we saw on TV. The sounds and the engines roaring into the headphones were amazing...

...so I come out of hyperspace of whatever it's called and smack bang land into the middle of the sun!!!

Turning the ship around, I floor it again and manage to jump to the next system. I am not sure if I will ever get over this first experience of how good it looks.

So I end up in my destination system, but how do I get to the station ?

No warp to station buttons that I can see, it seems I have to use the supersonic drive.

After skipping past the station twice as it does not appear to auto stop you, I hit the escape key for an emergency stop. I am 27 light years out and *** just happened...

...my screen starts to crack and complaints from the computer and tempatures etc.

I continue to do my mini jumps and end up about 5 light years from the station and my ship is now not very well. What happens ?

This time, the cargo door fails and I lose my mission cargo! :S  :D

Mission over...

...I have to say, that this initial experience of playing is EVERYTHING that any space game should have been up until this point.

The sounds are incredible as is the overall experience.

This game is going to be a huge TIME SINK!

So now that I've played a little, can anyone help me please ?

What am I doing wrong with the jump drive to get to the station ? Is there a method for doing this right ?

Thank you to all and the developers for what is going to be the best space opera game ever...

I recommend setting the throttle to about half power (so the blue light is on) and no more, perhaps even a little less. You'll get to your destination slightly slower but you should automatically start to slow down as you get closer.

Once you are within 1000km of the station and travelling at less than 1000km/s you'll see a message that you can safely disengage from frameshift. This will drop you out at about 20km from the station and you can fly the rest in normal space.

(In some systems things are different, when the station is very close to or very far away from the sun. But if you're flying around Eranin, I Bootis, Aulin and that area all the stations are fairly easy to get to. Don't go to LP98-132 yet as there's a fair chance you'll run into someone who fancies themself as that-guy-who-gets-his-arm-chopped-off-by-Obi-Wan. ;) )

There's a fellow called INaeem who normally posts a welcome if you drop an "Hello" in the introduction section, in which he posts a load of links to various websites, posts and youtube clips.

As for being blown away... go visit an asteroid field! Absolutely stunning!

Well, for one thing, as Jackie Silver said, put the lollipop on the throttle display at the middle of the blue bar (the lollipop will also become a solid light blue), that way the flight control computer will manage the speed (think of it as a kind of auto-throttle). Then just point at the station and wait until the message 'Safe Disengage Ready' appears right above the scanner display and press your frameshift/hyperdrive key and you'll end up at a distance of about 20km from the station.

Also, if you do want to drop out of supercruise while not being at your destination I'd recommend you first slow down to a safe speed (put throttle to zero/neutral depending on throttle preference) before pressing the key to do so. If the ships computer tells you to press the key twice you are not at a safe speed. Dropping out at non-safe speeds will damage your ship, as you have already found out.

As for your heat problems, try to have the heat gauge (the gauge to the left of the scanner display) at 50% or less before you engage hyperdrive/supercruise to ensure that your Sidewinder won't overheat and get damaged because of it. Other ships may have differing heat tolerances.

As a sidenote, while in system it is ls or light seconds, not light years, thats what you have when jumping between systems. ;)

Also, welcome to a beta universe of 38,000 cubic light years, have fun and enjoy.

Well, Father, welcome to Elite and our little hideout. The more this game develops, the more new comers will have trouble to grasp everything in a reasonable time scale. Don't think it is you, there simply is a lot to learn. But hang in there, you'll get there. A lot of help will be found here, on youtube, or in game.

Btw, sounds like your ship is overheating. The vents of your ship closes in supercruise and hyperspace (thats why you need to tug away your landing gear and guns before you can make the jump, your hull needs to be closed), so a lot of heat is kept within the ship. After the first jump, let it cool of a bit before starting the next jump.

One ship can handle more heat then the other. So the more you wreck, the more you learn, the more you learn, the more you'll enjoy...

Fly safe!

You have been given all the pointers you need above for successful superdrives, I will only add that less than four days ago the same people where giving me the same help, and now I fly like an eagle......... oh yes I do fly an eagle :)

It will all come together in no time at all.

I really enjoyed reading your experience by the way.

Father, I'm also, and still blown away. This really seems like a childhood dream is coming true this time. You'll find so many aspects in this game already, you wouldn't believe. :)

Nice to see a positive post from someone who's learning the ropes. Keep practicing Commander and it'll become second nature to you.

All the best.
