General The FDev Cycle of Disappointment and ED 2.0

The FDev cycle of disappointment:
  1. Hint at a new feature
  2. Watch as the community goes insane
  3. Release said new feature, but half-baked and with a lot of cosmetics to monetize it
  4. Cripple the game with bugs
  5. Watch as the community goes insane again
  6. A year later, "fix" the feature so that it is sort of usable but few like it
  7. Rise and repeat
FDev: just admit it already and free yourself from this mess. Put ED into permanent maintenance mode and build ED2 unfettered by the ill-conceived constraints of the original Kickstarter plan. Fix the lame networking. Allow crossplay. Put everyone into the same Open mode. Fix system security so it means something. Stop allowing blocking to be abused by affecting instancing. Let the sandbox be a true sandbox, not what we have now with the toys locked down and all the corners rounded off with bubble wrap so that few can get hurt. Etc, etc, etc.

Well I'll just sit down in this rounded corner on the comfortable bubble rap for a minute. I might even start humming a little tune.... you know the tune.

1. Build a consistent universe where the internal game systems whilst not necessarily realistic at least approach being believable.

2. Let people play how they want within that universe.

No that isn't their MO at all.

I think they do a good job. Bugs couldbe much much worse and have been in many other games. They generally fix game breaking bugs pretty quick.

Remember they are trying to simulate a galaxy.

That being said the game design and mechanics need to be open, challenging and rewarding. It just seems that they want to give us something but always at the expense or limitation of something. Example - Engineers give us some cool stuff but nope hide them make them hard to get to, then make it randomly generated, make materials hard and obscure to get. That being said they made traders and fixed all of it later.

Their issue is in the PREDESIGN of new features. THINK before you make something. Design it with the proper risk/reward/challenge before you implement it.

Their design development forum was the best thing they did. Now its shuttered and all new features were kept close to their chest.

Everyone knows if they pitched Powerplay to people it would have been shot down immediately and a different type of system would have been made, with a lot different outcomes and rewards. But they put all the work in and got it wrong like a few other things.

The thargoid thing was good it kept everyone fully engaged and then hasn't taken off any further. What other mysteries could be discovered out there?

The biggest glaring thing that should have been developed from the start was other alien races and life forms to discover. The galaxy is so empty of life its difficult to grasp that people could actually think we are the only species out there.

Just to be clear, imo FD have fallen quite a way short on the first principle. There are a lot of systems in this game which to me are a jarring break of immersion.
