Newcomer / Intro the federation gave me a mission that was against the federation's law -.-

how does that work?? they told me to go pick up 2 rebel transmissions, so i did. i returned back to the starport and my ship got scanned before i could dock it. now i've got a bounty that is half of the reward money... -.-

plus, does my rep cancel itself out? +rep for mission complete, but -rep for an illegal activity? how does this work???

Rebel transmissions are considered illegal cargo. the faction you did it for isn't essentially 'the federation' it's a minor faction alligned with them. Lots of factions will have you doing dubious activity, even the federation themselves, later down the line. Think 'black opps'. It's denied, but behind closed doors stuff needs to get done. If you get caught doing it, you'll have to deal with the consequences. Also, you can also even get pirate factions (anarchy) that are alligned with one of the major factions. they'll have you doing all kinds of illegal stuff, but will still add to major faction rep, even though it's illegal stuff.

Things aren't so cut and dry ;)

Think of it this way, the Federation can't be seen to be stealin rebel transmissions, but they still want them. If they hire someone on the down-low to do it for them, denying any involvement if you're caught of course, then they get what they want with plenty of plausible denyability and you make a tidy profit on the side.

I love the smell of politics in the morning. Wait...

lol. hey, that's what makes this game so great in my opinion.

actually, another question. how can you avoid getting in trouble? every starport seems to scan you before you enter. how are you supposed to do "illegal" activities then?

You make sure you don't get scanned on starport entry. Turn off all non-essential power-users (heat-generators), come straight in from out of security's range, do silent running for a bit at the end, and if you get scanned before going in the door boost like hell to get through the door before the scan completes, because there are no scans inside. No guarantees, but those things can work.

Those missions tell you that activity is illegal in the description - read the (not so) fine print and all that ;)

Unknown at this time, the whole rep system seems to work in a strange way.

You can either get these missions on outposts where it's easy to land without being scanned, or boost into the station (requires some practice to do it quickly enough to avoid scan, but slowly enough to avoid decorating rear wall of the station with remains of your ship).

Life of an outlaw in ED is tricky. ;)

hmm. alright. well if the rep isn't working quite right yet, i might as well focus on my credits for now.
