As an Imperial pilot, I hate the Federation and think they are a bunch of immoral, inhuman hypocrites with bad tastes and incomprehensible systems of administration.
Saying that, corporations have been hugely successful at changing the world. Sometimes for the worst but lots of times for the best. Lots of innovative products, lifestyles and choices (for the fortunate). They are the oldest of the big powers and therefore must have been the driving force that got Humanity off the planet and out there. This may very well be the real way we get into space!
I would suspect that Federal technology is cutting edge and very tradable, as in Frontier. Maybe freedom of expression and action belong more to Federal citizens than the other powers. However, the same citizens seem to disappear in the sea of individuals the Federation fosters. The Corporation and it's profile/figureheads hold prominence as an entity. How much recognition would any individual get if they were employed by a Corporation? Big business may very well eclipse government in social control - maybe it already has. It seems to coexist with democracy though and the (false?) premise that all citizens have rights and are free to live their lives as they want. This may very well be an illusion but it's a convincing one for the majority.
I'm hoping for more clarification from FD and the writers about the 'flavours' of the cultures. I'm going to be Imperial in ED though; I was Alliance in Elite and Federal in Frontier. That's my excuse anyway.
