The Fighters

Hello everyone,

Since I'm bad with searching, and since everything that I seem to find about this game is hideously out of date when I do try to search, I though I would ask this question here:

The fighters - what are their speeds at full throttle? Did they end up getting buffed to the 500-600 range?

Not boosted speed - I don't really care about that. Just full throttle.

If anyone wants to share their opinion/experience using them for exploration purposes, I would welcome that as well.

Thanks,

Riôt

I don't remeber exactly the speeds, so not commenting on them.

Regarding exploration: they are really fun to fly on planets, but aside the fun factor and the change of pace, they don't bring benefits to exploration in my opinion.
Their range is limited, so if you want to scout the planet surface you have to wait for the mothership and you can't really go that faster than the mothership itself.
Also if you fly low in canyons and such, there are dangers that mothership, following you, takes damage.

The combination of limited range + mothership endangerment makes them not very usefull for planetary exploration. The fact they can't supercruise makes then completly useless for system exploration.
They are really that fun to fly around the mothership tough.

BTW, "Fighter" has a clear combat role, so I'm ok they are not designed for exploration. Similar to SRV, the Fighter Bay can be a good template for future implementation of non combat fighters that can have different uses.
For example if you make them unarmed, I guess you have less balancing issues to take in to consideration and you could give them way bigger range.
Then maybe in a future where we will be able to bookmark coordinates on planets, they could use some sort of "belly scanners" to scan the surface. But since rocks are not persistent, and also many POIs, for these things to be implemented many changes have to come.

Since the lowest class of FSD in game right now is class 2, I was really hoping they would make class 1 FSD's mountable on fighters, but capable of supercruise only. Then a case could be made that fighters are useful for exploracondas as you could let your NPC scoop and wait for you as you scout the system in a much nimbler-in-sc fighter. Maybe even have your NPC go scan this planet while I go scan that one. Things like that.

After a little testing - the listed speed of a Condor Gelid F (the fighter I have fitted) is 316 ms-1 standard, 536 ms-1 boost. Its actual performance with 4 pips in engines is around 329 ms-1 standard, 555 ms-1 boost.

Performance varies slightly between different fighter loadouts, but not by much, and similarly the other types of fighter have different performance but again not by much.

Fast and fun, but they're not a patch on a heavily modded light starship; my darling Meretrix would leave them in the dust. They'd be good scouting around in a small area, I think, if you had a big slow ship, but less useful for just covering ground in a line if your ship has to tag along all the way.
