General / Off-Topic The first human, to walk in space, is dead.

Alexei Leonov, who was the first human to 'walk in space' has died, aged 85.

It was 54 years go, that Alexei Leonov, made history across the Planet. Mr Leonov performed his spacewalk on March 18, 1965, when he exited his Voskhod 2 capsule, secured by a tether. He nearly died back then, when he found that his pressurised space suit, had expanded so much, due to the vacuum of space. He could not use his hands and had major issues, even flexing his arms and legs and had basically become a balloon, floating tethered to the capsule; too big to get back inside the hatch. He only escaped certain death, by releasing air pressure, from his suit, by opening the seal of his glove.

In spite of this, he was back up there again, 10 years later, commanding the Soviet half of the Apollo-Soyuz 19 mission.

A level of bravery, beyond question. Another true hero of the Soviet Union. He will be laid to rest, with at military cemetery, just outside Moscow, on Tuesday.

I just read that during this spacewalk and the efforts he made to return to the cabin, he lost 6 kgs.

RIP Alexei.

When I was listening to the story on his death earlier today I was struck by the phrase "first human." Were there animals who walked in space before "man" did?

I had a recollection that at least one of the Soviet space dogs were exposed to space (in their space suits of course) to establish any radiological or other issues. Obviously they would still have been tethered in their boxes and "not out for walkies" - however I cannot find any trace of information to confirm this so I might have been mis-remembering.

First human or first man!
