The former app backers disappeared.

It probably disappeared because of the wrong URL being given in the email that went out to all Beta backers about the combat build. This way they will still get to the right place when clicking the link in the email.
It wouldn't surprise me if they later restore this as before when the Beta goes live on the 29th since then that link will ok longer be useful anyway...unless they mess up again that is!

I would be worried about this but since I changed my password a few months ago on the Zaonce store site, I haven't been able to log in to the Backers one.
Yeah, they gave wrong link in email and best fastest way to fix it was to redirect backers link to the shop. Silly mistake, could happen to all of us.
All they have to do is create another link for backer's app and link it from main page.

Had wanted to check on my Cmdr name to verify that I still wanted to keep it or change it since I chose it right after KS ended.

I realized by chance today that the backers app is down, did not check the email link yet.
While this is a mistake that could happen to anyone, it's not the best policy to simply let it go, change the link and have the backers work out what what went wrong. A simple note on the store site or another mail would have been better.
But anyway - maybe it's time now to close down the old backers app, migrate the kickstarter packages into store items, and have all your swag in one place. That should help with shipping logistics too, once we get to all the physical stuff being sent out..
