The Free Eagle

This free Eagle you get as a second ship if you're an early backer. Is there any point at all in keeping it? I was just going to skip it and go for a viper or cobra. Unless it's dome sort of limited edition.

Loving my eagle, more than the sidewinder, good first ship. Now I'm not gonna trade it in but keep it for bounty hunting as some have found out.

As other folks have pointed out there's lots of reasons to keep it and which ones are applicable to you depend on your play style. If you decide none of them do, flog it to supplement your meager starting balance and jumpstart your trading.

I was doing some Bounty Hunting in one. Got a Type 6 now so can make some extra coin to spare and upgraded the Eagle nicely. Put the best Power Plant I could find in it and some good Gimballed Beam Lasers or whatever they are, it rips stuff apart pretty good.

It's so maneuverable I can usually stay behind a target and put full power to weapons and just almost permanently laser them, lol.

It's a good little ship for doing some combat/exploration on the side if you do a lot of trading. Cheap too. I sold my first one for the extra cash at the start, then just bought another later.

Keep it

I swapped my sidewinder for a Hauler and tricked up my Freagle. I keep swapping from one to the other depending on my mood. Want to blow things up, use my eagle, want to trade use my Hauler. Best of both worlds.

I did put a refinery and a mining laser on my Hauler and set out to a bit of mining. I was enjoying filling my hold with Silver and Bertrandite, when some git started shooting at me. A battle then pursued with me and two system authority vessels who came to my aid, and the git in an Eagle. Combat with a mining laser is blooming difficult as there isn't a targeting reticule to help line up on the target, you just sort of point your ship in the general direction and fire, then adjust your position to hit the target. The battle ended up with one of the system authority vessels getting the kill shot, so I didn't get a bounty but it was fun non the less.
I continued to fill my hold with Silver when I got shot at again, however this time it must have been something pretty powerful because I didn't even get chance to turn on him before I was blown to bits. Lost all my Silver and it cost me for the insurance, so I sold the refinery, swapped the mining laser for a decent burst laser and went back to trading. :D

Well I sold my sidewinder and started using it. It's a fairly solid ship surprisingly and with upgrades I'm shooting down cobras and even asps with relative ease.

Just kept sinking my money into upgrading it.
It's gotten a bit ludicrous really. The ship is valued at 370K+ now. I'm not even close to finishing it off yet with all A grade gear.

~EDIT~

Also never seen the point of the kill warrant scanner. Tried it for a while but never got a single hit off it.

lol, yes. Mine's 550k-600k value at the moment. I ditched the KW for Chaff because I didn't want to possibly mess up my rep for my current area by killing people wanted elsewhere.

I'll probably sell it and fully upgrade a Cobra once I've got a few million creds. That Eagle fun to fly though with lots of upgrades on it.

Eagle is the best dogfighter in this game at the moment. If you are interested in combat it might be a good idea to keep it.

Eagle out-turns everything and for a beginner it is very good because you don't need to mess with FA off yet. Great for learning how to dogfight.

Love the Freagle, parked the Sidey straight away and started pimping my Eagle. Going to trade it in soon though for a cobra.

you need it in anarchy systems as everyone is 'clean' there and it's the only way to get bounties. Also if I'm at a non-anarchy system and I find someone wanted I scan them anyway and quite often they are wanted elsewhere and you get extra bounty. the police tend to be nicer to you if you scan targets first (but that might just be my imagination)

It's better than a sidewinder stat wise except in the armor departement, but there are more subtle points at play. I use and love my Freagle. It has better jump range than the sidey so if you plan to relocate that's a big plus.

As far as I can tell the only indication of a KWS hit is when you receive a non-local bounty voucher after you've made the kill. So not as useful as it could be, IMO.

Not imagination. If you don't scan first or let them fire first in "safe" systems (Dictatorship rating or higher) there is a fair chance that your action will be considered assault and you will be tagged with Wanted.

I always scan first.

Sold mine!

Once I saw the cost of good upgrades I sold my freagle to fund a Hauler-- I kept the sidewinder, but now I'm wondering why - I'm so far away from it it might be cheaper to buy another one than pay for the fuel to go back to retrieve it--I'm doing mostly trading to build up credits. Once I got enough credits I traded in the hauler on a Cobra for the extra jump distance and cargo space, still concentrating on trading --- will probably try a lakon next. I figure on buying a viper to do some combat when I have enough credits to upgrade it properly and buy it back every time I get killed. I'm pretty bad at combat --- I usually lose every encounter. Right now I do my best to avoid interdiction and try to run when pulled out of supercruise rather than fight. It gets pretty costly losing a hold full of cargo, paying fines for not delivering and insurance to buy back the ship every time you get blown up.

Think of the eagle as a fun little budget sports car-Its responsive, manouverable and has an excellent field of view. Its also pretty damn fast, but not the fastest and it lacks the brute strength, raw power and space of its bigger brothers. Overall, its a very fun ship to fly. You've basically got three options

1. trade it in for a different ship(note i didnt say better, better depends on your playstyle and short and long term goals)

2. Ditch the scanners or shields or something and use it as a faster and longer range sidewinder. I cant remember exactly what you have to ditch to install extra cargo space, think it might be shields.

3. Kit it out with an interdictor drive and use it as a beginners bounty hunter/pirate ship. Upgraded to make use of its three hardpoints it can quite a punch and with skill and FA off you can take out much bigger and tougher ships. Just don't expect to engage an anaconda and win unless you've got some experience turret dodging. The great thing about using it this way is that it is very cheap to rebuy so its a good way to wet your feet in these roles. Just always remember to have enough money to rebuy it! If you don't have enough money to rebuy at least twice, then high tail it back to your sidey and get trading. Once its gone, its gone!

personally I've gone for option 3. Even when I can upgrade it, I think I'll keep it because its just a joy to fly. Its also not bad for basic exploration if you strip it out and upgrade its FSD a little.

Nonsense, the Viper is far, far, far better than the Eagle (which I do actually like by the way). Even though the Eagle is considerably more agile than the Viper, it's lack of speed, and the Vipers speed and tough standard issue shields, means the Viper can easily boost away, FA/off pivot and boost right back in hitting the Eagle at will. A decent pilot in an Eagle vs a decent pilot in a Viper, the Eagle has absolutely no chance.

That said, the Eagle is certainly a better fighter for novice pilots, to get the most out of the Viper you need to be able to take advantage of its speed, excellent thrusters and also FA/Off, otherwise it flies like a brick. The Eagle however flies like an absolute dream, you only really have to worry about keeping it in the blue zone. I would definitely recommend that you get used to combat in the Eagle first, then upgrade to the Viper if you find combat is your thing. If not, and you want a more balanced ship, go for the Cobra. The way I see it, the Viper is only really for dedicated and skilled combat pilots.

Honestly not sure I'd say the viper is flat out superior.
Its good yes. But its a tad annoying to use effectively. Is there any way to have like a partial flight assist so I don't flop about everywhere when I fly without flight assist on?
Also its visibility is pretty lousy compared to the eagles.
