Played this game so much it was insane! So here's a few tips for any one with access to an old enough machine (or an emulator) that can and still does play this game... I do 
1. Start in Lave, sell the components of the CobraMK3 and buy a Viper. Head to Leesti and kit the ship out.
2. Trade until you have enough money to pay off the debt in federal space. You should at least have a combat rating of Dangerous by now and it should take no longer than 8-12 months game time (not real time).
3. Trade until you have the Panther Clipper and enough money to pay off the Imperial debt.
4. Head to Imperial space and buy an Imperial Courier, keep hitting 'repair drive' until the drive blows up (this may be an Amiga only bug), you may now equip a drive of your choice. You're welcome!
After this point it's up to you, but a kitted out Courier is an obscene amount of fun, especially for those bombing missions! And on the last note... 8 shield generators will stop a military missile from hitting the hull.
