The Future is Bright, The Future is....

what if someone hates orange? That person probably wouldn't even have bought ED after seeing a few screenshots with the HUD - and might change their mind once they can pick their favourite color instead.)

Then I'd suggest that any person having uncontrollable emotional reactions to colours has bigger issues than ED to deal with.

There is a well documented phenomenon among marketing circles that suggests Orange with Blue catches people's attention more than any other combination on the color wheel.

EDIT: As for customizable colors, I was always fond of the way the original Deus Ex had a dozen optional schemes for it's menu and HUD. By all means use the eye-grabbing one as default, but giving people choice is always a plus, and if the menu art is made in grey scale, it should be pretty easy to add a color slider later on.

What about color blindness?

I'm fond of the orange, there's something MetroidPrime-esque in it. I don't care if there will be no other colors, or if there will be a color tuner, or if each ship brands have theirs or not. Whatever will be will satisfy me. But this orange is great.

Well all I can say is that I find the color combination very pleasing, and it always had that scifi feeling to me.

Well had to purchase a new mouse Orange & Black Kone mouse with a lit up tatoo on the back which pulses and you can choose any colour for its pulse including orange so yeah i dont mind orange although i must admit it would be nice to be able to choose.

I'm a big fan of alternate/contextual HUD colors. Red/orange help preserve night vision so it is realistic to think that ships in the Elite universe would use that color so that Commanders can see darker objects against the background of space.

That being said, I wouldn't mind a cool blue for cruising around and docking since cargo pilots wouldn't necessarily need their night vision. The HUD could change colors based on your combat status. The cool blue shifts into a red/orange when you deploy your weapons hardpoints or if your scanners detect a threat.

Just my $0.02.

Remember guys, the screenshots from reddit are just replacing the color of the UI in photoshop. The holos that make the UI in this game actually give light and illuminate the cockpit, so changing the colors would produce a vastly different ambiance.

So, its imperative to make this happen!! I would gladly pay a micro-transaction fee for a cyan-redd(ish) UI...:D

I so nearly had a hack working for this but I could only reliably change about 90% of the hud. I could probably have got it working if I'd persisted, but it was taking too much time.

I read this and think about real world thought process why a, b and c look the same in user interface. The concept is generally keep the education curve to a minimum to learning machine to machine. The other side of the colors is the brightness against the eyes and choices of color is not to put you to sleep, which keeps you alert. The orange made since in these concepts. Every video I seen with the hud was very pleasing on the eyes. I hope I can turn down the brightness.

Keep your head on a swivel...

I'm not married to the orange but I don't find it bad. It has a nice feel to it, like the interior of a modern car. But I'd love to see options to customize the colour. I don't think the colour-changing dependent on what you're doing should be the norm. Maybe an option, then select a colour-scheme to suit the different states. I prefer a static colour.
