General / Off-Topic The future of Britains Game industry

Just another Grauniad Brexit scare story. They have several every day.

Its not a Scare Story. Its simply that Gaming Industry tends to Hire from around the World.
And by far not every of their Programmers would be able to Stay in the UK without the EU.
Meaning that they will lose large Swaths of Personnel if they dont Relocate.

Moreover Gaming Industry is not very Demanding on Ressources except Personnel.
So Relocating is very easy for them and not very Expensive.
Their Equipment aint very Hard to Transport and can be Arranged in but a Few Days.

So that Option being Considered is pretty Normal.
Some will take that Option as the EU offers a Greater Pool of Personnel without any Paperwork for Immigration.

I dont think it will be very big Effect on Economy tough.
40% considers it. Maybe 20% will do it.
And their Share of Economy aint that Big that they will have tremendous effects.

Its one of the Negative Consequences of Brexit. But its really one of the smaller ones.

This is one of those things that is probably supposed to be humorous, but ends up just being weird and awkward.

Well its one the Jokes you should not do when your Wife is nearby *gg*
At least not if you had not planned on sleeping on the Couch today ^^

I don't think this is propoganda, the games industry was very pesimmistic about Brexit before it all began. The games industry is all about huge hiring spikes after green light. The inability to hire from abroad to help with that process makes investor less likely to invest. I guess it all comes down to just how closed we want our borders. The Canadians work around this by giving games firms tax breaks and making it easy to immigrate to work in the industry. That's why 4 of my old colleagues are there now.

There is the issue, post brexit of what the EU will do regarding data protection and web services long term.

I know there are moves around ensuring that EU citizen's data is held in servers located in the EU or at least by companies registers' in the EU or such like.

This could have an impact on the servers for many games. Ok it may well be that the server farms operated by amazon/MS etc are located in the EU and the whole process is transparent from the game devs point of view (I'm.sure they want geographically local servers for latency reasons anyway) but there could be some more paperwork and hassle for UK based devs (for example having to set up a subsidiary in the EU).

It's a small thing but imagine a small studio of half a dozen people. They may not have the capital or expertise to comply with the EU requirements. This could make small "angry birds" type start ups much harder from the UK compared.to a French or ductch company.

Best of luck to Frontier Developments. I hope they weather this storm well, whether it means relocating from Cambridge or not.

No, the continental european youth will not be prevented from playing British video games. It would be a madness of Brussels against the disenchanted of the young people, by the unemployment of mass and the austerity of the EU. And in her speech, Theresa May indicated that the UK will remain open to the immigration of the talents to the whole world

:)

I work with a LOT of Indian outsourcing within the software sector, they're not from the EU and we do just fine, nothing will change other than needing to do a bit of paper work where there was none before.

Good game developers / designers work internationally, country borders have little to no impact on them if they're desired staff, if they're wanted they get hired regardless.

But you gotta have your doom and gloom headlines right :)

That's the point, there will be no bans on UK games in Europe, or vice versa.

It will just get a bit harder to operate from the UK. Not impossible, just a bit harder which, over the industry, will depress things slightly.

Getting a Swedish artist will not be as easy as getting one from Manchester. There will be delays and costs above the normal relocation ones.

Look at the US. A friend if mine's company wanted him to lead a team. He is a world leader in his field, working with other world leaders with unique talents and skills. Unfortunately team was based in the US. It took over a year before they got the green light to move, even then his wife, who is also highly skilled, had to wait another year in the US before she could work (though she did enjoy what was effectively a gap year!).

If the job had been in Holland, it would have been far simpler.

The trouble almost made them give up.

The international teleworking, at home is one solution among others. The time to resolve administrative problems

By "resolving administrative problems" do you mean things like agreements between countries on tax and work permits, maybe to allow people to telework across borders?

If only there were some international.organisation coordinating countries to remove the barriers to working across borders......
