The original Elite had an expensive bit of tech called the Galactic Hyperdrive. It was a one-use item that took you to another galaxy (which in that game was probably around 1k systems.)
This game could benefit from something like that. Here is how it would work.
1. It would be expensive (7 figures) and available only at high tech worlds.
2. It would be a one-use item.
3. It would take you instantly to any explored system on the galaxy map.
If you decided to take a 1 week exploration mission travelling thousands of light-years away, at the end of the week, you could transport back to civilization without back tracking. After resupply you could buy another to transport back to where you left off. Of course you would need to buy a spare if you wanted to get back quickly again. It could also rescue an explorer from the dreaded out of gas in a brown dwarf system trap.
It fits the lore since it was in the original game.
