"The Galaxy Counted Seventeen Sexes at this Time"!!!!

Excerpt From "The Dark Wheel" said:
The streets were crowded here and it took Alex only moments to realise that the South City of this particular Coriolis station was the 'down town' area. Illegal trade abounded, in narcotics, robots, slaves, sensuastims, prostitution and frozen organs. Spacers walked slowly, cautiously, most of them still wearing near-full suit, a certain sign that this was the rough quarter. Hookers, of all sexes (the Galaxy counted seventeen at this time) and races, but mostly humanoid, solicited from hovering platforms, ready to escape fast from any over-welcoming, unwelcome client. Advertising hoardings here were almost completely devoted to proclaiming the illicit pleasures which were available in South City. Police cars and remotes roared overhead, as did med-ships. The streets were alive with noise and bustle and filth.

I always remembered this part from the novel and wondered if the line about the Galaxies counting seventeen different sexes alone and most probably all of them of not human or of Terran origin.

So, I guess it's a bit much to ask seeing as there only going to have human/Terrans. Yet I was serious thinking about this before....

Having options to be pilot of with choice to not be male or female, but to chose from seventeen sexes!

Well, may be later on if and when new species of aliens other then Thargoids are added later on.

Yes, I find the game as it stands incredibly sexist!

If we only have the choice of male or female, how can I accurately depict my character?

I'd love an explanation of how 17 sexes actually 'works'. (For science of course. Maybe with some illustrations for clarity?)

Well, having more than two sexes within a species sounds extremely inefficient and would probably be ruled out by natural selection way before sentience appeared, so realistically speaking you'd only really expect male/female, maybe true hermaphroditism (giant sentient space snails), and potentially asexual reproduction.

Then the 17 would only be a reference to the type of sexual organs, a quick look at the animal kingdom can give you a good idea of what can be found. Completely extravagant organs sound fairly improbable.

The dark wheel is based on the old Elite lore, this game is not.
So I don't think you will get your seventeen genders

I'm a big fan of the old Classic Elite lore was hoping it would be eventually phased back in.

As I always thought the idea of a galaxy devoid of anyone, but humans/Terrans and Thargoids sounds more dull.

Oh the other hand, the idea of aliens that resemble human/animal hybrids or the other extra's from the Star Wars/Star trek universe sounds kind of . Even if it's more interesting.

I hope Fdev dont read these forums ..... I hope they are ironing out the psychopathic antics of the AI and not spending all day modelling 17 different types of genitalia

Humans and Thargoids are not the only races in the E:D lore.

They are the only known existing sentient races.

Sex is a continuum. Think of it as there being a large number of different pieces of information, each of which says something about sexual characteristics and each of which can take a variety of forms, or be missing damaged and/or duplicated. The whole "XX" vs "XY" thing is a convenient and misleading simplification - broadly applicable, but not fundamentally true.

I only read the Dark Wheel this year and realized that the Elite Galaxy featured more known aliens than I had previously thought. I was very surprised because I thought the Thargoids where the only known ones. There is also a Thargoid like 'sister' race that is friendly towards humans but is at war with the Thargoids.

As long as individual members of a species aren't able to reproduce by themself OR need multiple members of said (or a different) species to reproduce, it's servicable enough... transitional or hybrid sexes are usually not essential to the survival of a species and thus neglectable, from a biological standpoint.
