The galaxy divide appears to be killing Odyssey's open mode

I've been switching back and forth between Odyssey and Horizons lately and noticed that open mode in Horizons appears to have a lot more players. There are more random encounters, but the difference is most obvious at places like Deciat and ShinDez. In EDO I'm lucky if I see at least one other player in those systems, but in EDH I often end up in instances that look like this:

Has anyone else noticed this? Is Horizons really that much more popular, or does Odyssey just have issues with instancing? I feel myself drawn more and more towards EDH lately because it feels more alive.

I have limited SSD space but I downloaded NMS to give the new update a look. There isn't enough game there to keep me interested more than a couple of hours.
Honestly, I think the "big three" of Elite, Star Citizen, and No Man's Sky are a bit like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears for me.

No Man's Sky doesn't have enough going on (for me), Star Citizen has WAY too much going on (I can LITERALLY barely get out of bed, and have zero desire to spend an entire day setting up my hotas, and that's not even counting the bugs) whereas Elite is "just right."

Personally I'd love if all 3 of them had a baby together - the expansiveness of Elite, the in depth crafted uniqueness of Star Citizen's worlds and ships, and the cartoonish mental-trousers of No-Man's Sky's "campaign"...

True.

The reactions here tell me that the answer is yes.

I'm not saying that EDO is doomed, but the galaxy split is a problem, because people can meet only in one place at a time. And whether we like it or not, the preferred place appears to be Horizons. Maybe FDev should roll out client 4 to EDH owners as soon as possible, so that the two player bases can at least share instances in space.

Disclaimer: I did not refund Odyssey but changed my preorder from deluxe to standard one week before the launch and spent the price difference on the Plainsman Drifter pack. I've been playing EDO exclusively since May 19th until a few days ago. I did not notice EDO's desolate open mode earlier because I spent most of the time since launch on an exploration trip to Beagle Point and other places. But hey, keep the cheap shots coming! Each of them pushes the thread back to the top of the list. ;)

Yea it’s too bad there haven’t been any meaningful replies yet. I’ve been curious about how populated the two are since most (maybe all?) of the squad mates I play with that aren’t taking a break/gone due to the launch are mostly playing in Odyssey. In Horizons I don’t see other CMDRs that often and I haven’t seen much difference since Odyssey launched.

Odyssey was/is a flaming flop, undoing years of playerbase growth. I don't think there is anyway for anyone outside FD to tell how much of the remnant playerbase is on EDO/EDH, but your experience paints a picture.

Please no. Let the Odyssey faithful eat their own sandwich. There is a reason so many people are still playing EDH.

But hey, keep the cheap shots coming!

The knights drool at any possible chance to mock the non-believers . . . because they are so confident of Odyssey's stunning achievements, of course. Standard fare around here. Enjoy the comedy of it all, it's free.

Multiple answers to that..
First, consoles can only play Horizon. So that's a chunk of people that can't play Odyssey at all.
Second, if you care mostly about spaceship, then horizon is better for space content. More FPS, less bugs. This is probably especially true for PvP player, where latency is a big deal, and there are multiple balance related bugs as of now.
Third, many people have switched back to horizon, while waiting for the performance fixes.
Fourth, VR users are probably more likely to stick to horizon until Odyssey have actual VR.

Also, the population for august is close to the lowest point it has ever been. It's not DOOOM, but it's still very low. And low population being split further is going to feel even lower.

First, most PvPers I know are much younger than the folks on these forums. They simply do not have as much money or resources for new computers and games. Most PvPers did not participate in the paid alpha.

Second, since game-breaking bugs like lag when deploying a SLF, have never been adequately addressed by Frontier, basically killing large ship PvP, most PvPers have completely lost faith in FDev and have gone on to other games.

Third, the launch of Odyssey as finished dlc was deceiving and expensive. Furthermore, EDO had not much content of interest to PvPers. What might have been of interest is Sphere of Combat scenarios, but from experience with ages old lag and instancing issues, we were skeptical of such gameplay actually working in multiplayer. And, of course, anything under 60 frames per second is laughable for pvp combat.

So yeah, if any younger PvPers play at all, it will be more often in Horizons.
