The Galaxy is BIG

So I actually spent some time yesterday in the galaxy map, outside of the 55 bubble.

I aimed at the galactic core and just went in a straight line and down axis so about 45 degrees in an attempt to get to the centre and outside the plane.

I did this for about 10 minutes and the amount of stars you pass is simply mind boggling if you think one day you might actually be able to visit them all.

I zoomed right out and realised I'd only travelled about 4-5% further towards the centre than where I started. It's SO big its insane.

I then double click the centre to see what was there and what the view would look like. It's so bright, I can't wait to see what it looks like from a cockpit. It invoked a sense of exploration in me I hadn't felt yet in this game.

I fully expect there to be a 'race to the core' when ED opens (assuming you can freely visit all the stars and they are procedurally generated systems and you have fuel scoops. this could be something akin to the old races to the poles in ages past.

I expect I will be one of the people who will race at the start to get a long range ship (probably an anaconda or Type-9) and then blast off towards the core.

I really recommend looking at the map for a while and taking the time to appreciate how big our galaxy really is.

Search for SOL as well :)

How many jumps would be needed?! Approx 1700 with a max range of 15LY ?!
jump to system - refuel at gasgiant upper atmosphere (if there is one) - jump further ...
but maybe the bug äh wormhole /slipstream drive from Elite 2 can be reproduced :D

“Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.”
― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

I doubt anyone could ever visit them all.

As we've already discovered in 55 systems, you can't fly in a straight line and you are limited by the jump distance of your ship.

So getting to the core will be an mammoth exercise in planning your jumps and refueling to ensure you don't end up in a dead end and not able to jump without back tracking massively.

I doubt it'll be a straight jump race to the core but rather a much more plotted and planned affair.

I am definitely going to attempt it.

If ED is designed with future proof in mind, I can imagine that in 10 years we will get closer to the goal of exploring the galaxy.

Most of the galaxy could be uninteresting to most, but it will be the interesting locations, whether procedurally generated or manually seeded, like the galaxy center that will get all the focus.

Don't even imagine visiting them all.

The galaxy is so big that, even in 10 years time there will still be systems that noone has even clicked on in the galaxy map.

Someone estimated that to get to all the systems and spend just four seconds in each of them it would take over 1,200 years of constant (24/7) play!

...and I'll bet you that you'll get stranded long before you reach the core. And your distress beacon will remain unheard for millenia...

Not that I'm adverse to some exploring myself, but I like to meet fellow players from time to time.

(I wonder if they will really unlock everything right from the start, or adapt the reachable space to user numbers to avoid everyone being lightyears away from each other...)

Still floating here in space due to Frontier development's negligence of not implementing the need for sustenance, sleep or aging.
I curse thee DBOBE !!
And now back to counting the dustparticles.
