The game doesn't start anymore

Suddenly I am getting that phenomenon where I click the "play" button in the ED launcher, it turns gray for a few seconds, and then it gets re-enabled again. The game doesn't launch.

I got this same phenomenon once before, some months ago, but it somehow resolved itself after a reboot. This time it's not resolving itself, and it has been like this for two days now. What can suddenly cause this to happen?

I know that there's a set of complicated steps to be done listed at https://customersupport.frontier.co...es-and-error-messages-seen-with-the-Launcher- including downloading several install packages from the Microsoft website, doing all kinds of cleanups and disablings and enablings and whatnot, but I was wondering if all that is really necessary. (I somehow have the hunch that I am going to do all those things, and the game will still not launch...)

Windows likes to update itself all the time; God knows what it's doing when it does that.

Tried the old run as Administrator routine? Or disabled antivirus?

Running "verify files" was giving an error of "incorrect manifest checksum". However, when I emptied the Windows internet cache and then ran "verify files" this time it worked and now the game launches.

(Of course files suddenly becoming corrupted is rather worrying in itself, but this is not related to ED itself, so it's my headache. My computer has been showing symptoms of degradation in the last year or two; this is not the first time. Oh well. Computers never work correctly for long. Such a PitA.)
