The Glass Is Half Full Positivity Thread

So there is a lot of negativity, bashing, complaining, whining, moaning etc of both Elite Dangerous and Frontier Developments on these forums. So I thought why not have a thread to mention the good things about the game that we seem to forget in all the negativity.

RULE FOR POSTING IN THIS THREAD
I ask only one thing if you want to post in this thread ... no complaining. There are lots of threads for you to complain about whatever it is you want to complain about. This is not the thread for it. I ask ALL moderators to move posts out of this thread that complain and either move them to their own thread, or a relevant thread.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I'll start with a few things that I think are good about the game.

Route planner will now plan routes up to 1,000ly
"Discovered by" tag on systems in the galaxy map
City lights on planets
Module sorting in outfitting

So there's a start ... what do YOU like about the game?

For me it's choice: I can choose to do a bit of pew pew; I can choose to do a bit of smuggling; I can choose to go off and explore the far reaches of the galaxy. I'm not constrained by a pre-defined plot so can pretty much do what I want, when I want. Sure, some bits are a little more polished than others and there's still plenty of scope for improvement across the board but we're getting there.

I like the fact there is no go from a to B to do C. Its true to the original elite. Too many games follow a linear path.
I love the physics of the orbits, the light is fantastic, following the shadow as i dock my Asp adds so much reality.
I love the ambience in stations and outposts, yes there are no people or faces, but that suits me.

Since it came out I've played it more than any other game.

things I like: the sound, flight model, freedom from some omnipresent voice telling you what to do next, massive galaxy, cool looking stations and ships, ring systems, exploring, blowing things up

I like the procedural generation galaxy, allowing me to find things that set my imagination alight.
I like the background sim (bugs and all), giving me suggestions on what to do with what I find in this game.
I like the background of the Elite Universe, making it easy to give context to what I do in the game.
And I love the fact that its fairly easy to make a profit doing what I enjoy in this game.

It's a bit like being a goalkeeper for FD. Keep a clean sheet and you are doing a great job that largely goes unspoken. Start letting in bad goals and you hear ALL about it :)

Anyways my positive ... The flight model is superb I love it.

Some people may think this is useless or blowing sunshine up Frontiers waste disposal port... I don't. As Alien said, there is no shortage of complaints and criticism, and many actually have a point. The game is far from complete, and thinking FD themselves do not realize that is laughable. That's why this is still one of my favorite posts around here.

So here it goes, my main points:
  • Great feeling of vastness and absence of boundaries, not being "on rails"
  • You-and-your-ship focus with adaptable outfitting, upgrades etc.
  • Awesome audio adding a huge deal to immersion
  • Great design with stunning visuals even on less-than-ultra PCs
  • Excellent handling / flight model for the ships

And it will continue to get better, with for example
  • Teaming up with friends ("Wings")
  • Better navigation
  • further development of the factions and missions
  • additional content (e.g. new ships)
  • and tons more, in due time
Yes, all that will take time. But don't tell me you don't have other things to do or other things to play in the meantime. I don't believe you.

This game is firly in "flawed masterpiece" territory for me. Despite the missing features, annoyances and balancing issues, ED still has:
- Sense of scale
- The basic combat mechanics are very well honed
- Graphical and sonic design is superb
and most of all
- The almost tangible sense of being in a spaceship, whether you're on a monitor or rift. It just feels right.
Since beta hit, I've spend a couple of hours playing other games, but it's been 99.5% Elite.

Its a relaxing game where you can be as involved as you like. I feel like an intergalactic Delboy thinking up get rich quick schemes, the only problem being Trigger wants to kill me.

Not perfect but it fits my outlook and I enjoy playing it. Of course my inner child cries 'moar!' but this comes with time with large games like this.
