The Community is pretty well divided over what happened with the Gnosis, battle lines are drawn, faith in FD is either reaffirmed or destroyed, accusations made and retracted. But what if the event played out differently, how would it have effected the outcome?
Mooka's Hypothetical
Things stay the same up until Monday when FD realise the event has got out of hand due to the number of participants and correctly ascertain that some will be upset when the Gnosis doesn't jump as scheduled. Remember FD always intended the ship NOT to jump, they had told Canonn it wouldn't. So instead of the cunning plan that would have made Baldrick proud, they decided to be more proactive and do the following:
(1) Start issuing GalNet articles advising that AEGIS has discovered large concentrations of Thargoid activity in the target system inside the Cone.
(2) Inform Canonn that the jump will not proceed, no if's no buts, IT WILL NOT HAPPEN and tell them to make revised plans.
(3) FD continues with their warning narrative, advising that the Pilot's Federation (or some other powers that be) have issued a permit lock on the system in question due to the increased Thargoid threats.
(4) If by Tuesday, Canonn has not told the participants by now, FD releases a GalNet article advising that the jump is off, citing the increased Thargoid activity and the fact that the destination is now within a permit lock.
(5) FD and/or Canonn continue with the Thargoid threat narrative, advising all that they recommend to all participating Commanders to prepare to defend the Gnosis within the next day or so, or leave now. This should give anyone taking notice enough opportunity to either clear the area or prepare for the upcoming battle.
(6) THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT THAT WASN'T ATTEMPTED BY FD: FD sit down and think about what is about to happen, the first time that a programmed event concerning Thargoids and a mega-ship, in real time, with Commanders. They look at what will happen, what might happen, what won't happen and take the necessary precautions and hot fixes to correct any problems, whether perceived or verified.
(7) Server tick happens, the Thargoids begin their attack on the Gnosis, first just scouts then ramping up over the next hour, then a lull then another wave (basically timed to the peak playing times across the globe so everyone who wants to, gets to join in the fun).
So if the above happened, would have you stayed on the Gnosis, rushed to join the Gnosis, or given the opportunity, jumped in your light combat Explorer ship and got out before the attack commenced?
