"The good pirate"

I really believe that the 'fun' you and your submissive partners have is not healthy. No matter how gentle the abuse it's abuse, yielding to such, becoming familiar with it and through expectation ending up liking it is an expression of illness. PvP in the Elite universe is a perverse twisted BDSM arrangement, the world would be a better place without it in it.

Your BDSM comment is nothing if not rude.

Interdict me while I'm trading and I'll submit, throw expletives at you and high wake while spamming my SCBs. I will not give my hard earned stock to some grubby pirate who claims to live by a code.

I've had multiple run ins with pirates who destroyed my ship after I submitted and gave my stock away.

Interdict me in my Python and your Clipper is at risk. FA assist off and some thruster control = me shooting you from behind with fixed weapons.

This is no good pirate. A good pirate is one who's wreckage I fly through. Thieving, grubby scallywags the lot of yas!

See, this is the spirit! This CMDR is PREPARED for piracy. Shields, weapons, and a plan for escape/counter attack.

As it should be.

I've said it before - it's a game, and in this game, you have the option of carrying out a fantasy role in an open universe (well, galaxy, anyway...).

The in game persona of a player is not a direct reflection of their real-world self. Player piracy is not some BDSM fetich, or whatever twisted take you want to adopt, it's merely people acting out a role that they consider fun. It doesn't make them a real life pirate, or a real life killer, or baby-eater.

I swear, if I didn't know better, I'd swear you were some evangelist trying to turn the damned to the path of light! Dude, seriously, it's a video game! You buy it KNOWING that such things happen - it's int he reviews, the adverts, heck, if you buy this game (or any game) without doing some kind of research as to what it's about, then you deserve all you get. But if your mental state is so fragile, and you're such a delicate petal, perhaps you bought the wrong game?

I'm not a pirate, and I won't pursue piracy until we either get a 2nd commander slot, or I buy a second account. The character I am portraying online currently is more of a lone wolf, that tries to keep his operations legal, though his definition of "legal" is a bit loose, as smuggling is one of his preferred activities. Now, I'd never smuggle in real life, but the added risk to every docking procedure brought on by smuggling goods adds tot he excitement.

As does th epossibility that some pirate will interdict me on the way. My smuggler is currently a Python, fully - A rated and capable of taking care of itself, though I know that even a wing of small ships could make life difficult.

I am also currently on an exploration mission, I've flown 200k Ly so far, and am now just 27k Ly from Sol. I'll be returning to the bubble as I have played my whole trip. In open. Now, I set out in March.

March - count the months.

The possibility of a player interdicting me and blowing me to pieces is part of the fun, and a risk I am taking. Luckily, I have my Python parked at a system on the fringes of civilised space, and thus, my first goal is to get to my Python, so I can then make the rest of the trip to the various systems I will sell data in, with a degree of protection.

My point is, I'm prepared. Too many people are not. Doesn't make it morally bankrupt, just a valuable lesson for those smart enough to take it.

I've had run ins with murderers hiding under the guise of pirate and think it gives the whole enterprise a bad name.

A true pirate would never destroy a ship - the trader will boycott the system and the pirate would have a hefty bounty to deal with.

However, most people's instincts would be to submit to interdiction and run - A pirate should however announce their intentions and give them a choice.

True pirates only want credits, which is consumed by fines and damage and generated by liberated goods. If the trader is not forthcoming, I'd expect the pirate would have to remove the trader's shields and use hatch breakers to shake some cargo out, and perhaps inflict some hull damage as punishment (a few %)

The choice is that the trader can either drop some cargo if interdicted by a superior force or fight/run. If they make it difficult, the pirate would attempt to take cargo by force, potentially causing more expensive damage. The right choice would be to pay the pirate off.

A true pirate would never pick a fair fight and never destroy a ship. Played the right way, player piracy would add some real danger to the game without spoiling it.

Bring it on!

Steveme: I completely agree with what you write. A pirate should be just like that!

Jaeger: Regarding the BDSM theory mentioned earlier, I find it most interesting. I never thought of it like that. To be perfectly honest I think the BDSM theory is somewhat over the top. This IS a computer game. What people do in their real lives really has nothing to do with it I believe. At least I never became a princess from playing Long linve the Queen - and I am real good at it!

Actually I find this game a way of roleplaying. I am an old roleplayer and in D&D I have played lots of roles - both the do-ggod'er ones and the more psychotic ones. I do not identify myself with these as such. It is purely a role you take on - nothing more. So have no fear, that I will rob you in real life If we meet.
