Community Event / Creation The great UP hunt

Operation_Get_Em.jpg

There comes a time in the lifetime and indeed career of every Commander where he has to decide if his destiny is to fish. Or cut bait.
I hate cutting bait. Nasty smelly stuff. Gets under your finger nails and stinks to high heaven.
So are you a fisherman? Or a bait cutter?
Want to be able to bask in the reflected glory that accrues to those who DO STUFF?

Be able to tell all who ask (and a fair few that don't),'I was there'?
BE one of those.
Come one, come all. In fact forget come one. Let's make sure it's 'Come all'.

So here is the situation: We know frankly naff-all about UPs. Unknown Probes. Well that's not strictly true. We know they exist, and we know that nefarious forces are shipping them about the place in heavily guarded convoys.
But we would rather like to know a heap more. A whole heap more. Already a number of intrepid Commanders have 'liberated' a few.
Unfortunately for the wider community this isn't nearly enough. Oh no.
In the finest traditions of the Canonn I therefore propose the 'heist of the century'. Heists, in fact. I propose that we engage the services of every like minded Commander with the sole intention of liberating a sufficiency of Unknown Probes that we will then be able to disseminate them to those Commanders best able to perform such tests as will avail us of the information we seek. I have already suggested that Rizal should be at least one of the beneficiaries of such an operation. Bungalo has been suggested to me as another. All Commanders who believe themselves to be in a position to perform 'appropriate' testing should consider themselves likely candidates to recieve at least one UP upon which to perform their tests should my proposal bear fruit. I will defer to majority opinion in such matters as and when.

General Plan:
Commanders should make themselves available in the first instance at Ross 47. From here, wings will be formed.
Ships should be equipped with as much hull reinforcement as possible, A class shields, along with cargo scanners and hatch breaker limpets. Note that for this operation we aren't interested in chasing conveys. Wake scanners, whilst not forbidden are unnecessary within the constraints of the operation. Otherwise, when considering a load-out, think survivability not combat capability.
Within each wing (which will be maintained for ease of operation), one ship will be designated 'the scooper'. It has been noted that collector limpets may be bugged, so we will eschew the luxury and do things 'old school' and scoop manually. Commanders intending to come along with the intention of being 'scoopers', make damn sure you are familiar and competent with the mechanics of scooping.
If/when contact is made with a T4 CDP and upon confirmation that the convoy is indeed a UP carrier it will be necessary for the 'finder' to anchor his wing-mates into the same instance using wing-beacons. Once everybody's safely into the same instance with the convoy, the 'scooper' will leave the wing and play no further part in the operation until such time as the cargo is released.

Tactic:
Once the designated scooper has left the wing and readied himself for the next phase:
The remaining wing members will then proceed to ram the Python. Yes. Ram. This is not about combat skills. Commanders of bigger ships, especially if they have A class thrusters will be of particular use here. With co-ordinated effort the Python can be moved a considerable distance from its escorts. Once the Python's shields are down, one again probably pre-designated shooter will fire a hatch-breaker at the Python. Once the cargo is released, the 'scooper' will move in, scoop the UP and retire IMMEDIATELY to another system. Everybody else will bug-out as opportunity presents, re-grouping in the scoopers' system. Ideally at least one commander should be equipped with CRCRs. I unfortunately do not have these, but I will be on hand with lots of big AFMUs.

Round Robin:
Currently Ross 47, Wolf 294, and G99-49 are the only systems in which there have been UP convoy sightings. I propose that we patrol these three systems.
Plan:
Enter system and proceed along shipping lane as if heading to nearest station. Probably hang around no more than 15 minutes, although I suspect 5 minutes is enough if we can get LOTS of commanders on hand. If no suitable USS is found in within that window, jump to the next system and proceed as before. Over and over.
We can do this commanders.

Remember that the entire object of this operation is NOT to be that guy (or gal) with a UP (which might be cool), but to be ONE OF THOSE GUYS (or gals) that HELPED to get ALL the UPs (which will be coolest). We will then promptly hand over, or arrange to hand over, the UPs to those commanders considered best able to make meaningful use of them.
Kudos will be available to everybody that turns up. From Sidewinder newbies to Corvette vets. Much virtual back-slapping and rep for all :)

Go! Go! I'm ready to science!
I cannot join you in the search because RL prevents me to wing with other CMDRs during my playtime, but I will search for UP alone, as I'm doing already, and I'll call for back up if I find a Convoy.

I should also probably make a point of stressing this operation is not about combat. So anyone capable of landing their ship at a Coriolis will be capable of not only taking part, but doing a good job. I'd really like to see some new-comers get involved. The vets of previous Barrels, Snatches and Scours will be of enormous help of course.
Once a hatch-breaker is fired the wing will become 'hostile' to the convoy (which is why the scooper needs to leave the wing before the hatch-breaker is deployed). Aside from maybe hanging around to ensure the scooper succeeds their part of the mission, the now under attack wing-mates should 'advance to the rear' or as I prefer to call it, run away pronto. We're not interested in losing ships. Nor should we be interested in saving the hide of a commander who can't bring himself to leg-it. More fool him :)
We are going to use the game-mechanic to our advantage. Keep that in mind ;)

Can someone translate this looooooooong text into 2 sentences. What's this all about? Short and precice. I read 2 chapters and still have no clue.

Unknown Probe Convoys hunt, organized in multiple wings, to take over the Convoys easily.
Date and time on the OP.

Excellent.
Also I've been running rings round the three suspect systems this morning and the incidence rate of T4 CDP is way up compared to when I just sat around for hours in Ross 47 the other week. It seems we can expect them to spawn almost within seconds of our arrival. I have not come across an example of THE convoy yet, but I figure with many more commanders that'll change.

What then? You can't "process" the probes, right?
Well I can't, no. However I know a few that can.
There's a pretty long list of stuff we can try which will hopefully give us more information. Pretty much along the lines of where we went with the UA.
But we have to have UPs before we can do anything at all. And at the moment we don't have them.

I spent a good few hours yesterday hooning around the Ross 47, Wolf 294, G99-49 circuit and turned up T4 CDPs almost immediately, almost every time I arrived in a new system. Not the T4 CDPs I was looking for granted, but this change in incidence (from my point of view as an unsuccessful hunter when sticking to one system), is very encouraging. Nothing can be absolutely certain of course, but I'm leaning very heavily toward the opinion that if we can get multiple wings of Commanders whizzing through these systems searching, at least some of them are going to come up with the goods :) In fact as far as in-system duration goes, I'd say it's time to move to the next system immediately you get a 'useless' USS. Okay, we'll get a little dizzy maybe, but we'll be covering a lot of 'ground', and I'd guess the answer to the rarity issue has to be one of volume - more USSs checked = more likelihood of success.

I would love to help, but RL work will prevent me from joining until at least 22:00.

Anything specific that late stragglers can do to assist?

Keep in touch for a start :) Although I put a time frame on the operation, there's no real end time as such. Jump into Discord when you're free and see what's what. if we're all busy having a ball pulling UPs out of the sky like mackerel out of a barrel we might just be still hard at it.

Post Operation Report

Things got off to an interesting start. Commander Starbeaver and myself, having met up some 40 minutes prior to the official start time for the op. found the right threat four convoy immediately! Knowing that we were undermanned but having little option at that time we dropped into the USS. I have to say I was gratified that things went entirely to plan - right up until the moment I fired the hatch-breaker. With only Commander Starbeaver on hand to scoop and/or cover my retreat, the rest was pretty much a blur. The entire escort fleet decided I made a nice target and opened up, shredding me and my shields. The probe appeared to be destroyed in the ensuing carnage, the convoy jumped away, and I was left with a rather battered Python.
Not an auspicious start. We were bouyed with the thought that we had been able to find the right convoy so quickly however.
Eventually we were joined by the rest of the hunter fleet.
I have to say right here that I had hoped for a few Commanders. I should have known that when the chips are down, The Canonn don't do things by halves. The roll-call for this operation is too long for open display so I've hidden it below. I must shamefacedly admit that the list is certainly incomplete. Commanders finding their attendance unrecorded PM me and I will add them to the list. Anyway, that list is below.
The Canonn Probe-Hunter Fleet:
(in no particular order)
Starbeaver
Stoffel
Kyp Shard
Nicholas Powell
Jordach
Mhyre
Bungalo
Cyclon3
Hugeness
Locastan
Nilreb
Panzertard/John Stoutbeard
Darwin
LittRar
TheDeathshead
Phylax
Chris Rosenkreutz
Cookie Jarvis
Delmonte (piloted by Cmdr Outspan)
And of course Layne Vakarian
Patau82 (Commander Monkey D Luffy) was also on hand directing the search in the open server. Kudos commander.
More than twenty commanders!
Much fruitless hunting then ensued, endless USS, endless Threat Four Convoy Dispersal Patterns, nothing.
And then. At approximately 16:15 Server time we found one. As a result of some degree of instancing issues only five Commanders were able to engage the convoy: Commanders Bungalo, Kyp Shard, Panzertard/Johnstoutbeard, Nicholas Powell and Mhyre:
Commander Panzertard/Johnstoutbeard captured our first successful sortie in this video so I shall add only that Commander Bungalo should recieve especial mention for cool-headedly directing operations, Commander Mhyre for a smooth demonstration of how to scoop, and of course Commander Nicholas Powell whose ship Blitzspear suffered severe damage following his launch of the hatch-breaker. Such severe damage in fact that it was some time before he was able to engage sufficient drive to limp back to port for repairs.
Much back slapping and self-congratulation ensued, during which time the Fleet was pleased to receive the personal congratulations of none other that Frontier Developments own Lead Designer for Elite: Dangerous, one Sandro Sammarco who was particularly impressed that the Fleet had thwarted such a difficult convoy. That we were able to receive these congratulations is of course because of the dedicated actions of our own Commanders Delmonte and Outspan who had taken the time to join the Fleet whilst still at LaveCon, Mr Sammarco borrowing Commander Outspan's headset to address the fleet personally. Extra kudos to Delmonte and Outspan.
After which operations resumed:
It is here that all who attended showed what it takes to really be considered 'Canonn'. Four more hours of fruitless search until Commander Cyclon3 reported having found another convoy. Unfortunately severe instancing issues meant other commanders were unable to drop in with him and eventually the convoy jumped away. Commander Cyclon3 having had the foresight to equip his ship with a frame-shift wake-scanner then gave chase to nearby system Kokary. Commander Bungalo, having followed then interdicted the Military transport Python, with the rest of the fleet following as they could.
This time things didn't go quite as expected with the transport mysteriously dropping cargo wholesale despite not having had its shields taken down, but once again Commander Mhyre swept in to safely scoop the Unknown Probe.
Canonn 2 : Universe 0

If you will indulge me, I organised this operation, and it is a matter of great personal pride to have seen it bear fruit. However there can be no doubt that without the determined and coordinated efforts of so many Commanders for such a great length of time - ultimately for no personal reward other than the knowledge of a job well done - it could not have been done.
I was especially impressed with the level of comms discipline throughout the operation. Sociable banter during quiet periods, but immediately professional and no nonsense whenever a target was acquired. Good job all.
KUDOS Commanders. It was good to have flown alongside you. You truly are 'Canonn' and I am proud to count myself among your number.
Well Done!

Awesome job Commanders!
I had time to stop by Panzertard's live stream for a little bit, and tried to join in as well, but then RL bit me in the a.. again. Fully expected it to, but hoped to atleast be a part of some of it. Maybe next time.

Can I be so bold as to request a more detailed report to fill in the blanks in this spreadsheet? I've tried to fill in some of it, but a lot is missing unfortunately. Thank you!
