The Great WishList Debate (European and American Zoos)

I don't think so, necessarily. Giant pandas are supposedly all goong back to China, apart from the handful that China doesn't own
I think this is the case in the US from what I have heard but apart from the Edinburgh pandas I think all the other zoos in Europe with pandas don't plan on sending them back yet (though I don't know what the length of their loans are).

The only pandas around still not owned by China I think are the ones in Mexico City though I could be wrong.

Huh, in the article I read it was talking about the UK, as well...

And yes, Mexico City has their own pandas, but I thought that there were some others

Edinburgh is the only zoo in the UK with pandas. In fact, I think the US is the only country outside China to have multiple zoos with pandas? At least they did, not sure how many have them now outside of the Smithsonian.

From what I’ve heard, something happened with China’s ambassador saying something like “There are two ambassadors of China. Me, and the Pandas at the National Zoo.” Then what happened is since the spy balloon incident, China is taking their pandas back and only letting countries that are ‘friendly’ have their pandas. This is why Russia will keep them

There used to be 4 zoos in the us that held pandas but only currently 2. San Diego, Memphis, Atlanta and the national zoo all had pandas up until 2019 until they gradually started to return. Atlanta zoo will have until the end of 2024 then as far as I'm aware, all us zoos will have no pandas.

This is what the EAZA said regarding the bears in their most recent report about breeding programmes:

"The RCP report proposed the following:
• Six EEPs for Brown bear (focusing on U. arctos and U. a. syriacus), Polar bear (Ursus maritimus), Sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), Sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus), and Asiatic black bear
• One Mon-T REPLw for American black bear (Ursus americanus)
• One Mon-T Phase out for Giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca)"

Taken from page 45 of the link below:

That being said, the EAZA's decision will not affect all European zoos, as the Finnish zoo to keep giant pandas (Ähtärin eläinpuisto, Inha) is not actually an EAZA member. I guess the plan would be to encourage zoos to simply not extend their panda's loans and send them back to China once the loan period runs out, rather than necessarily trying to cut short the loan.

P.s I have visited some zoos in Australia and they very much include their native iconic species in their ABC zoos, because their species are iconic worldwide, do americans celebrate their iconic species in the same way? if so, which species can I expect to see the most across america?
In the US, most of our native species don't get celebrated the same way native Australian animals do, most people here consider them boring, but the native animals that probably get similar treatment as their Australian counterparts are: Bears (Black and brown), Cougars, Bison, Alligators, West Indian Manatee (if the zoo is big enough), maybe wolves as well.

I'm from Maine, but I have had the privilege of visiting ZSL London Zoo! The species that stuck out to me the most was the Asiatic lion. Those are nonexistent over here. The same goes for a couple of primates, but most of the species there are pretty common in AZA zoos. I think the London Zoo's giraffes are hybrids, but I've noticed a lot of European zoos have Northern (Rothschild's) giraffes. We mainly have Masai and reticulated giraffes, most of the reticulateds being hybrids.

And as some have already stated, we don't really exhibit our native wildlife too much; it's mostly black and brown bears, bison, alligators, cougars, and manatees in Flordia. Some may have elk, bighorn sheep, and red wolves, but they aren't as common. Skunks, raccoons, and red foxes are rare and usually are just ambassador animals.

Yes, but sadly there is only one still, the last year we lost the oldest panda outside of china, and there is only one left, although we probably still have this panda for at least 4-5 more years, I hope one day visit the Mexico city zoo and see the last Mexican panda, because I live so far to the Central mexico

Pandas are only in Zoos because of their appeal, theirs no conservation reason why having them scatterd all across the world is better then inside of chinas own conservation facilitys would only benefit the species, which is rather stable anyways.
The truth about pandas is that as cool as they are all the money wasted on renting them could be spend for actual conservation.
For the price of renting one panda for a year there could be many less popular species completly saved, nature reserves and breeding populations established and suffering humans helped.
Especally among amphibeans there are many species that go unnoticed for being less appealing, quietly dieing out, lacking the funds to rescue them while zoos are spending extreme sums on loaning pandas.
Imo its a good thing that they are phased out, not even talking about the role pandas play in chinas international politics and how thats concerning in its own right
