The Grind...

If you think ED is pure grind, please spare a thought for those less fortunate than ourselves.
I've been playing MechWarrior Online. It's not great. But it's free. It's a good laugh and change of scenery from ED... Sort of. :p
(Lots of pew pew lasers and missiles!)

Anyhow, an average Mech will set you back around 7,000,000 C-Bills. (They vary from a few mil, to 17mil).
However, on average, you only earn around 100k a match. 200k on a good match, but my average, being generally rubbish, is 70k. Lol

So, in order to afford the average Mech, I need to play 100~ matches!
And there's only 11 maps.
And all the game modes quickly degrade down to team deathmatch. Effectively, 1 mode.

So, 100 matches, 11 maps. 1 mode.
And that's for an average Mech, with default equipment.
And Heaven forbid you change you mind and sell you Mech. You lose 50% of its value.
Same with equipment.

Now, run along and enjoy what you have in ED. :p

I'll be returning to ED after that rude awakening!
I also want to see the aliens.

So. Compare ED to a free to play game in order to excuse the grind? Sure, why not. I knew of a bloke called Adolf Hitler once. Man, tell you what, I'll be voting for Theresa May after that rude awakening! (not really, but you get the point, or probably not tbh).

Fastest application of Godwin's Law ever?

There is a bit of grind in ED, namely PowerPlay, which isn't too bad, and navy ranking, which is horrendous. (IMHO)

But the rest, is actually just "playing the game", if you chose to do the same task 5000 times, that's your own fault.

In MechWarrior Online, there is only 1 task. And it doesn't pay well. :p
Heck, they even have a wheel of fortune for winning 1 of 10 items, after buying keys with real money for unlocking supply crates, that you've been given.
That's like paying real money to roll for Engineers, after they give you all the materials needed. :p

I've played Guild Wars 2 a bit aswell, and while much better than MWO, it's still a lot of grind for very little.

Atleast in ED you actually achieve stuff. :D

You are comparing full priced game with free to play model... does not work this way ;) Grind in Elite is to cover lack of deeper content atm, grind in MW is to make you pay for stuff.

If you love robot pew pew then the grind isn't a grind. I quickly get bored with robot pew pew though. I checked out the latest build and finished my skill trees but still haven't played a match.

Grind is in most games, especially those in which you raise your character up over time. However, grind can be camouflaged, so to speak, by making it part of interesting game play, and not requiring a ton of repetition. Elite's grind camouflage is extremely thin, which is why you see so many complaints about it. There's also no "end" to Elite, per se, so grinding is really only necessary when you want something new and cannot currently afford it or qualify for it.

So, this wiseacre CMDR sez, take breaks often, and enjoy the ride. Once you get the end-all be-all ships, they're awesome for sure, but you're still doing the same old things as before in them--and now with no incentive to grind any more. If you don't get anything from the game other than a means to an end, you might as well quit now, because you will for sure after the new smell on your Cutter, Conda or Vette wanes.

Zero to Godwin's in one post.

/slow clap.

Anything is a grind if you don't enjoy it. If you enjoy it, it is not grind.

I suspect there are people who would consider driving for two hours around Monaco 'a grind'.

True but the grind also makes the game boring because it becomes too repetitive playing so many match in the same mech on the same map just to work towards change.
A faster progression would be more interesting through the excitement of piloting a new mech and learning to use it.

Can you pay for those expensive mechs with real money and get them in 1 minute?

I will be honest I am pretty ignorant of politics, but technically wasn't hitler a lefty?

as for mechwarior I was about to get into it, then they added 3rd person mode. I didn't bother after that.

totally psyched for MW5 however. proper single player game with VR support.

giant mechs in VR what is not to love?

Hitler was a Fascist, ergo Far Right. Hated the unions, communists & gay people....but loved business, & was loved by the Conservative Elite in Europe, UK & US.....but I digress :p.

Oh my, it seems you haven't played World of Tanks.

A tier 10 tank costs 6.1 million and if you insist on not paying and play average youll have to play tier 6 (which isnt that bad) and make do with 10-15k profits per match. Thats only if you dont find yourself matched up against tier 8 and need to fire premium ammunition that costs basically 5-50 times more than regular ammunition.

Assuming that an average tier 8 match will net you about a 10k loss and 33% of the matches being tier 8, you can see where this is going.

And we haven't even started to talk about equipment and modules...

I currently have over 2000 hours in the game (making it the game I have played longest outside of the Civilization Franchise) & I concur with the saying that "the grind is in your mind". If you obsess over "credits per hour", or fastest military progression, or god rolls on all your G5 upgrades then, yes, you probably will find the game a grind. If you just play it for the fun of playing, then nearly all the grind vanishes immediately.

That said, Power Play is definitely a grind, which is why I will continue to avoid it until it has had a proper overhaul (I have already said, elsewhere, what I would like to see that overhaul contain, so won't repeat it here).

Military ranking, though not a grind, is definitely uninspired & largely devoid of meaning outside of the rank itself.

Now, to their credit, FDev have admitted the flaws of Power Play & Military csreer progression, & hopefully both will get a significant overhaul in the post 2.4 period.
