The Han Solo manoeuvre

The FSD is half way charged and I'm down to my last shield ring. I thought I'd try something I saw in a movie once.

Flight assist off, boost, pitch with thrust and in a near instant I'm facing my attacker. I boost again heading for a point just behind my attackers engines. I can sense his/her confusion " is he doing? is this guy gonna ram me?"

In my head I can hear the AI warning me of the odds of surviving a head on assault against an Imperial Star Destroyer (poetic license).

As I shoot past the ship I watch the holo of the Imperial Clipper as it painfully tries to slow down and turn to maintain the chase. I boost again and chuckle to myself as I see FSD drive charge suddenly accelerate as I break free of the inhibition field.

Whoomp . . . I'm away. I reckon that's the closest you can get to pulling off the Han Solo manoeuvre in Elite Dangerous.

Loved to read your story :)

Props to you Commander ;)

Wasn't that manoeuvre actually done by Princess Leia or was it Lando?, when they turned back to rescue Luke hanging from beneath one of Cloud City's "cities" in Bespin, ESB...?

That was more like a immelman manoeuvre, which is a real tactic in dogfights.

This maneuver is common knowledge. Anyway, I'm yet to see an Imperial Clipper that can keep with a top speed of 442. A cobra can reach this speed with full cargo load (60t). Probably 445 if you install shields.
Turn, boost, high wake out.

Or a 'Crazy Ivan' in RL, from the cold war days, when Russian submarines would turn toward an incoming torpedo to try and get within its safety range so it would not explode on impact.

You got The Hunt for the Red October all wrong. You should re-watch it.

I thought the Han Solo maneuver was the famous... or infamous "watch this" and nothing happens. Or maybe the "no but we can outmaneuver them" and all you do is corkscrew around two or 3 ISDs which bumbly collide with one another... hey to think of it that looks similar to one of the trailers for ED!

You know what who needs the Han Solo maneuver when you have the Epic Geordi Maneuver

There are 2 ways to pull off a real Han Solo maneuver in this game. But yeah, I'm taking those secrets to the grave.

In the meantime, why not just jump to another system rather SC, in which case mass inhibition won't be a factor.

That maneuver was in Serenity too..

If you are thinking of the maneuver Reynolds and company pulled on the Reaver ship chasing them in the premiere episode of "Firefly" (named "Serenity"), rather than something from the "Serenity" movie, that's exactly what I thought of, too ... I think that's a closer analogue to the described maneuver than anything I can remember Han Solo ever doing, since both involved a sudden reversal in direction intended to open up sufficient distance to engage the "hyperdrive" before their pursuer could turn around.

Good on the OP to have pulled that off in the game, though!
