The Hollow Box

Do you agree that all a hollow box should mean is that a ship has been scanned?

it seems to me from the majority of responses that it's there mostly because players are afraid of each other.
Nothing to do with fear, it's simply a daft idea, don't go implying the people that disagree with you are cowards because your poll didn't go the way you wanted it to.

Seriously?! If that is true, I have reached a new low in disappointment.
Not quite. On some Macs it isn't shown, whilst on others it is. I have two and can see the hollow's on one but not the other.

On the original question: I don't think that the system should be changed.

It stems from a need to be able to identify players in a multi-player game - otherwise all ships would look the same and players would not know if there were other players around them.

From the Kickstarter FAQ thread here:

However it is not working very well, mostly misused. In no other game have I seen this kind of separation of players and NPC.
To me its an attempt to make it easier not more difficult, however its only now easy for some, and harder for others.

How is it misused? Not sure I quite understand what you mean.

So I'm guessing you haven't played any other MMO? Most MMO's distinguish between NPCs and players.

as a trader you can't hide from predators, they will know instantly if a player enters an instance, if the box was equal with the NPCs he would at least need to check each radar signal to confirm, in that time I could potentially slip away.

You really don't need any more chances to get away, especialy in a Cobra 3.

I guess highwaking when attacked is not an option? I think people need to learn to highwake.

God I hope not. I live of those dumb traders, would hate to see a bunch of smart ones roam around. But then if the choice is between a dumb one (logger) or a smart one (hi-waker) which do I chose?

I personalty don't have any issues, I just find it strange and not needed. Well if DayZ and Arma, DCS, IL-2 are considered as MMOs then yes, if not then no.

Hehe, you know what would freak people really out ?

Text chat Contact (unknowingly NPC) - and have it respond E.L.I.S.A. style
-> then allow Voice-Comms towards the (unknowingly) NPC - and have it respond SIRI/Cortana style with random Voice modulation

Only to end the mystery after a defined time (i.e. "I'm sorry I can't do that Dave!")

I'd bet that'd totally freak people out if NPCs were mixed amongst human Players like that :D

The smart ones are easy to spot, they start to counter you in SC before you even position to interdict.;)

Heh, true. Even had a very smart T9 who knew what was up before I even scanned him. He was in a good spot for him too right at the star so as long as he wasn't pointing at the star itself it would be somewhat hard to get him.

For some bizarre reason it appears to be connected with video card. If I play using the integrated GPU, no hollow box. If I fire up the GTX970, hollow box.
