This hasn't really occurred to me before but can you turn the hud off?
Ctrl+Alt+G.
They could invert the left and right panel, or the com and info panel, 2x2 panels, 4 combinaisons. I am sure it would make everyone become nuts ( or harder to switch from one manufacturer to another one, which would be make each of us more attached to such or such brand, as it is te case it RL) Like the Brits driving on the wrong side of the road

The HUD is part of the Remok helmet system which was standardized by the Pilots Federation.
The fact that it casts light on surfaces in the cockpit suggests otherwise.
There is an option for that. Go to Settings / Mode Switches and set Looking at Comms Panel to Does Nothing. You can set that for the other popup panels as well. I have all of mine set to Does Nothing.

You're right, but that's how I've always interpreted it.
The hud could be projecting from the suit, chair or bobblehead, either way the Hud is a standardized piece of kit.
True, I guess being projected doesn't mean it has to come from the ship. It would make more sense than the ship manufacturers and two superpowers all agreeing on HUD design.
