When you dock or get out of your ship on a planet the compass keeps track of your ship as you run around. But at bases it doesn't and so you can lose track of it in drastic times. it needs to be there always when you walk away for any reason, and when doing missions important mission objectives need to be there too. I was told on steam that if you don't know where a building is on a base for instance, the n go to the nearest terminal and look it up. Fine, if you're friendly and the guards allow it. but on mission doing convert ops for instance we don't have the time or luxury for such things. And people with level 1 everything starting out cant afford a fight with security over stolen info. so...put the important info for missions on the compass to, as a way to get us moving in the right direction. telling us for instance that
'go to the habitation building do this' doesn't help if you have no idea where the habitation building even is, and most times we certainly cant ask guards for directions...lol
