The lack of communication

Hi,

I would like to open a discussion about the lack of communication at Fdev.

The game is around 5 years old and I think there is a lack of communication because we, players, are in the dark about what’s the future of the game.

While I understand it may be hard for a game like Elite to have a specific roadmap, it would be nice to know where we are going, even if it changes.

I know some games don’t have great communications either like most FPS, because you already know what you paid for and it’s not games that will evolve that much over time. Elite is a game that will evolve over the year and I think it’s why communication is important.

We have some newsletters, but other than announcing new paint jobs, there is nothing very important.

Fdev should take example on some teams about communication. For example the most recent Sea of Thieves.

I really enjoy the game, because in a way, we know they are working hard to improve the game with feedback from players and to make it fun.

Another less known game out there have weekly development blog where we actually get work in progress screenshots and the executive producer is also open to interview.

I don’t want to say here that Elite should do the same (even if it would be a great improvement), but at least communicate more about the future of the game and acknowledge what was wrong before and how you plan to fixe that. Right now I just feel like our feedback forum has no purpose. There are lot of suggestions and ideas here, but I feel that they are not listening.

We still don’t know what’s really coming in Q4.
If only we could have some news where we can read:

"We saw your feedback about spaceleg and since we really want to make that, it takes more time than we anticipated, so instead we focus on XX feature and the upcoming feature related to YY in 2019."

Now we are building expectations on nothing and that’s why we are always sad angry or sad at each update.

Thank you very much

It's been this way for about a year. Now they only come around when they want to sell us something or tell us bad news.

Today's post and its subsequent comments are good news, for an upcoming game update that we don't need to buy:

Hello Commanders,

We wanted to give you an update regarding the numerous Focused Feedback forums. We recognise that it has been some time since we’ve spoken about the topics covered but rest assured, the team have been hard at work in shaping the final chapter of the Beyond series of updates.

If you’re unfamiliar how the Focused Feedback forums function, allow us to explain in detail. The Focused Feedback forum section is a platform which allows us to present you with proposals on upcoming game features. With your feedback, this allows us to potentially tackle any problem areas we might have missed, or areas in which a feature can be improved upon.

We realise that it’s been some time since you’ve heard about those features, but we want to assure you that the team appreciates the time taken to discuss, scrutinise, and critique Focused Feedback topics. While the team have not been able to address each and every piece of feedback we received, we can confirm that the vast majority of discussions have been extremely useful in reviewing those features before they are released later this year.

In the coming weeks, you will be able to see the new content in game for yourselves in our planned public beta tests. We’ll also be showing it off for the first time in a series of pre-beta launch livestreams.

We also wanted to take a moment to talk about the Powerplay discussions. Whilst this was never planned as part of the Q4 update of Beyond, it is still a feature that we wanted to collect feedback on and investigate and we thank you for that. The discussions players have had about Powerplay give us strong guidance on how we may revise the feature in the future.

What’s next?

Later today we’ll be presenting to you our vision for Exploration improvements, in a post on the forum, and we look forward to hearing what you think. As this topic will function differently from previous Focused Feedback topics, we’ll be asking you to share your feedback on the thread itself.

In addition, over the coming weeks, we’ll be presenting you summaries of the features coming to Beyond’s final chapter in a series of social and forum posts, and you’ll be able to test them for yourself in the public beta – of which we will have more details on very soon.

In preparation for the beta, we’ll be archiving existing Focused Feedback discussions. We would like to once again thank the community for their feedback on all the topics so far, it has been immensely valuable.

Shut up and buy more paintjobs OP.

Just kidding :D

While I would appreciate less cryptic statements sometimes (we have something super-duper awesome for Q4 but we won't tell you now...)
all in all I think FD communicates ok'ish with it's community. It's not super good, but not that bad either.
There will always be people who are happy with the current path of the game,
and people who dislike it. So FD will never be able to make it right for everyone.

And seeing how aggressive the tone in this forum sometimes is, I don't blame FD for not posting as often here as parts of the community would like.

And I disagree with your statements about the roadmap. We know the direction Q4 (the next update) takes.
What more do you want? Where the game is in 2022? I bet not even FD knows that, and they won't tell even if they knew.

Today's post and its subsequent comments are good news, for an upcoming game update that we don't need to buy:

As the whole purpose of Beyond is to rework existing features (along with adding some new content), we already paid for it. That's the point. The fact that they're just now getting around to addressing the elephant in the room (re: the missing focused feedbacks) doesn't really help the counter-argument.

I agree with OP!

In il2 BoX when game producer announced bad news about Pacific theatre being delayed he explained why and said what they will doing instead, he announced new Bodenplatte expansion till they gather materials for Pacific.
So while ppl were disappointed about Pacific delay they were happy at the same time about Bodenplatte.
Now that's good PR!

Same thing FD could do instead just bringing bad news all the time.
Along with bad news they could be more specific and say they're moving to develop Atmo planet landings or space legs for example and community would be happy, avoidong all this bad publicity.

Cool, I'm glad you agree that we don't need to buy the next update, and that today's post is good news too.

Is this kind of post necessary? Is a 1-UP that important to you?

^ agreed. Other MMO games have mentioned vaguely new game updates, but often not into detail until months or even a year later when closer to the update arrival. There is just too much unhelpful salt on this forum and other media where I think it just puts unnecessary myriad expectations and scrutiny of FD's work. Why not just play the game, or uninstall and leave for a while until the new updates come.

Why does this Community have this sense of entitlement, why do some here think FD needs to divulge what they have planned? Will it stop you playing now if you knew what is going to be released next month, next year, the year afterwards? Will it stop you playing if you didn't know what was going to be released?

It is almost like some here think the FD needs their personal approval to proceed with any new development or update!

You must be new to the forums, welcome ;)
