The Lament of the Distant Space Mariner

Set a spell and hear my tale, a tale of tears and woe
About the loss of life and limb (and data, don't you know)

The tale takes place on a distant moon, some light years in the void
A tiny, lonely SRV; a commander most annoyed

He'd set her down, on this little moon, his Explorer he did land
To roll about in his little craft, and contemplate rocks and sand

The gas giant hung in the sky; a sublime and glowing sight
The shadows on this hilly moon made poetry in the night

The languid beauty fed his soul, his heart sang out its song
But in his reverie he'd lost himself, and wandered far and long

His ship, the cad, thought he'd gone too far, and launched into the night
The SRV kept wandering deep through the dying light

A narrow canyon, its steepening walls, beckoned him further on
Another rise, another rock, another hour gone

"But where's my ship?" he thought to himself, "I'm out here all alone.
"It's time to fly, to seek the stars, and then to make for home."

So Recall he did, as the shadows slid into ever-growing gloom
Then he sat and gazed, and scanned the skies for his not-yet-realized doom

For his ship, it seems, was piloted by a less-than-skilled A.I.
Steep canyon walls, in a narrow notch, proved a little tough to fly

It happened fast: A sudden flash, and the sparks began to blow
A computer's voice, a blur of words, "Ship's hull about to go"

A blaze of light, "Mothership destroyed," and he began to wail
Then denial, rage, acceptance: All that grief entails

Two weeks' data gone, in a single blink, and more credits than he could count
He sat all alone, in that SRV, and felt his sorrow mount

There was nothing more that he could do but watch his air deplete
So he opted next to self-destruct, and make his doom complete

So I leave you here, my space bound friends, with a lesson to be had
When recalling ships on distant shores, find a broad, flat landing pad

Shed a tear for me, brothers and sisters.

Athracht out

Sorry for your loss; losing two week's effort through something like this stings. I bet that Frontier support would restore your ship and maybe data in this case. After all, this situation wasn't due to player error. When you recall your ship the game isn't supposed to send you to a rebuy screen. Good luck and fly safe!

Agreed, this sounds like a recall bug. Contact Frontier support and they may be able to help you. Kudos for the very creative way of presenting this disaster, loved the poem. :)

Oh explorer friend, I did listen with such despair,
The egregious loss you suffered was simply so unfair
The ship itself did not listen to your cries
and now in pieces upon the moon, is where it does now lie
It behooves you to cry to the Gods, now to scream and shout!
Oi! Frontier! Pull your finger out!

Ahhh.... Poetry to my ears. Literally!

Thank you for the commiseration, everyone. This happened quite a few weeks ago, and while I did briefly consider asking Frontier for some recompense, in the end I chalked it up to bad luck and moved on. I posted the experience as a warning to my fellow fliers to beware of dense, immovable objects, in the form of sheer cliff walls, when leaving the task of landing in the dubious hands of the ship's computer. Really, I wish I had captured it on video. With the Benny Hill theme as the bg music, it would have been a hoot!

Fly on!

That is some bad luck. The AI have had a lot of self-destructive behaviours over the years. For a long time it was suicide to dismiss the ship on a high G planet.
I guess, with your outcome that is loss of all your data means they've plugged that old exploit preserving the data if the mother ship is destroyed before the SRV?
I don't think FDev can restore your scans, but they tend to be generous with cr reimbursements for these types of bug related disasters.
