Elite Dangerous has been a source of inspiration for me. Its scale and beauty are unmatched by any other game, but this is what it makes it a great disappointment. It's as I'm being seduced to immerse myself into a universe only to be disappointed that it's not a universe. The lore is story content is severely lacking for the galaxy we're plopped into. I really don't mean to offend, as the story content relative to other games is great, but relative to *a galaxy* it's minuscule.
This has got me obsessing on what I actually *want* in a game and the coinciding banging my head against the wall thinking of ways to make it even possible.
What I want is a galaxy teeming with life.
I want 50-100 "bubbles" to choose from, all with their respective species/empires to role play in and as.
I want to be able to visit a random pocket in a random sector and find a bar filled with members of species I've never seen before, with a bar tender telling me stories about his childhood and the old days of his beloved empire when it was in its prime.
I want to be at risk of crash landing on a random water world that I'm scanning and have a very similar experience to the one I had playing the game "Subnautica".
I want to investigate rumors of ghosts in war torn sectors and find myself in an abandoned space station where I might experience something similar to what I experienced playing the game "Alien: Isolation".
I want to visit an ancient library of a long gone race that once harnessed the power of every star in the galaxy and read their Shakespears and his Hamlet.
OBVIOUSLY this is insane. But you know what looks like it might also be insane? The AI revolution. Is it possible that artificial intelligence could integrate itself into a game's universe and create great fiction on a galactic scale? This might be completely out there, but I just had to get some thoughts that have been banging around in my head out there. I've been spending a lot of time on this game...wishing. Please, if you decided to read this somewhat long post, tell me what you think. Tell me what rings true with you and what you think about the possibilities.
