The latest Odyssey Video and DTEA

Greetings,

It happens every time. Frontier releases something new added to the game and all heck breaks loose on the Forum mostly negative about something that they haven't even played yet. Probably why Frontier doesn't release much. Others worry that it is going to break the game and many times in the past they are right. I worry about that with Odyssey so make sure all your expensive ships are safe and only use the cheap ones when it goes LIVE until we see if Odyssey breaks something. But more it is all about that darn rebuy and fearing starting all over in a Sidewinder that fuels many emotions on the Forum. For better or worse that was Frontier's call so they live with it.

But before players start vilifying Odyssey with lots of Forum posts maybe more information about how it will be played would be useful. We all watched the video but did we actually see all the details or most of us just emotionally responding to something new which some like and others hate. Welcome to ED.

The Down to Earth Astronomy guy just posted a play-by-play review of the latest Odyssey ground assault video. It is amazing the detail he covers on what we are seeing including every new HUD or icon we have never seen before providing a lot more info that my eyes never saw or understood. He like the rest of us can only guess but with his mathematical approach to the game I like his guesses. So take a look and learn something then post on the Forum.

Down To Earth Astronomy is a fan support YouTube website who obviously likes the game and is into the math of how it all works. If you want to crunch shield numbers in a spreadsheet this is your guy. Frontier is lucky to have him.

Regards

People think that software companies are such delicate flowers that a bit of complaining on a forum is going to change their marketing strategy. Seems unlikely.

Frontier came into the ED process with a lot of good will which has been eroded over time. I'm surprised by the lack of reaction good or bad, but maybe that's because forums are becoming old hat, or former commanders have just moved on. Who knows.

Many of the players I'm friends with in game haven't logged in for 72 month, just let that think in. However I do believe EDO will bring them back.

That's a big maybe from me. There has been a lot of criticism, some of it is constructive. There are some people that are clearly not discussing in good faith, but those posts are just as easily ignored.

I'll be playing the alpha, so I plan on taking my ships through the meat grinder attacking settlements.

Alpha and Beta we can do anything without loss. USE IT and report to Frontier so eventually when the game goes Live it gets serious. It you played the game just to see the new toys versus helping Frontier dial in the issues then don't complain when problems show up in the live play version.

Everyone is going crazy about the video, lots of negative feedback. So, I might as well give my opinion too.
I thought that the CM's made the point, rather clearly, that this was a pre alpha build. An earlier version of Odyssey, separate from the build they are going to drop on 29 March. I'm confident that the Alpha will be vastly more polished and finished than what we saw.
It fulfilled its purpose of giving us a feel for a bit of the gameplay, at the same time I can understand that they would not allow the CM'S to play with the build that is due to go Alpha, while the devs are putting on the final touches.
It makes sense that they would be allowed to use an older, but functional backup copy though.
As for gameplay, the mission shown is merely a variation of the mission types we have now, as such, you never have to do missions like this if you don't want to. 99% of the time you could probably avoid combat altogether if you wanted to, focusing more on the other gameloops depending on your playstyle.
Odyssey is not a FPS, it's just adding the ability to walk around and to visit light atmosphere planets. It's goal, I'm sure, is to add a layer of depth and immersion to the galaxy we already play in.

A reasoned and well thought out post.

I have duly reported you and the post.

Yeah this is important because the window that FD will be focusing on our feedback is a small one. We'll be shouting into the void 1-2 months after the full release.

I have a combat Krait Mk II build I designed with two large turreted beams for one live player and a selection of two fighters both with fixed weapons where a live player flies one and an NPC flies the other. What I see is the players firing the beams gets bored while many want to fly the fighters. Yes I could do better in a Krait with more engineered weapons but this ship was designed for live players to get together and maybe more importantly figuring out how to use the Comms. I will ll take this into Odyssey Alpha and see if the Devs messed it up looking for live players to man the positions. Who knows. You will love the ship name. I did.

I'd agree if Frontier didn't charge. Expecting commanders to pay for early access and then do the work that Q and A should do is a bit rich.

I wouldn't say that I've gone crazy about ANY pre-release video stuff that Frontier's showed us, since day 1.

The proof has & always will be in the individual player either trying it out for themselves in the game release or if they've bought into an alpha or (free)beta pass.

What I've seen so far, particularly the lastest 'heavily cut & cropped' mission sequence, focuses purely on the pewpew side of Odyssey.
As this kind of role playing doesn't interest me in any way, I'm waiting to see what other NON PEWPEW ways there will be in the game. So far on this front I've only heard words & very short sentences.
Looks like I'll be waiting until 29 March (or 30th, when the game servers settle down!) until I'll be finding out all this stuff for myself:unsure:

Good points about the gameplay shown being pre-alpha and that we should wait until we're actually playing it before making a judgement.

However, I need to say:
Down To Earth Astronomy is a fan support YouTube website who obviously likes the game and is into the math of how it all works. If you want to crunch shield numbers in a spreadsheet this is your guy. Frontier is lucky to have him.
whenever I've watched DTEA videos where I have some knowledge, the srv ones, his more recent courier build and high G landing for example, he gives factually wrong information and poor advice.

For someone who apparently likes the math of how it all works the mistakes I've seen makes me distrust the rest of his content.

Edit: no comment on the video you posted, I've not watched it

I do agree that they have not shown us enough.
