the layman's guide to fuel scooping

Ever since my esteemed fellow CMDR Ziljan said these words...

Ziljan said:
I think everyone has their own style of sun diving. There is the basic U dip, the tangent line, the skim and twist, the orbit, the park-n-scan, etc.

...I've been thinking, 'hey, why not make an illustrated guide?'

But then casual Friday took over.

Nice work... very funny.
My prefered one is the T Tauri... I'm ranger, and i'm still trying to scoop Tauri...

yes, you know... this star shines... and i'm like a mosquito... and hmmm.... one day !!! yes, one day !!! i'll succeed in scooping a Tauri.
or i'll burn in hell eventually

I don't get why fuel scooping is a big deal. My cobra just skims the surface for about maybe a quarter of the sun's circumference, fills up the tank, break off and go back on my way. Heat gets up to maybe 80% tops, but that doesn't seem to matter much.

Does it change a lot for bigger ships or something? I would have assumed that larger ships would also have access to more powerful fuel scoops to compensate for larger tanks.

The Cobra has dexterity in it's dive scoops quickly enough, and won't overheat if you have it outfitted for exploration. Larger ships take longer to exit the corona so you need to time it a bit better and pick your dive spot carefully depending on the star. The Asp also overheats a little faster than the Cobra, so it really needs the faster fuel scoop to start the jump from inside the Corona. The Asp typically gets to 86% when you are trying to make 44s jumps.

I forgot to add in my other post.... Great job! I wanted to rep you, but it won't let me :( My favorite is the last one, though I didn't see my own dive style. It would require a third dimension coming out if the screen though ;)

I'm not done yet. (And it's all your fault. :) ) I may in fact start a 'A Man and his Asp' series...

+rep for the Lorna Cole reference.

Thanks! (I heard that one at a formative age...)

I literally dive...

Biggest hazard: pushing my sysmap hotkey when it's next to the "next target in jump plot" hotkey as I am turning away...

Brilliant. I've done all of these methods at one time or another. The T-Tauri one especially still gets me occasionally... "Getting a bit close, shouldn't we be scooping by now...OH GOD I'M ON FIRE RUN AWAY!". :)

I stop whilst scooping, wait until it is about 250-300% brakes on, I tend to use to scan nearby object as well. So whilst scooping tilt the craft up until it starts scanning.

I often do as well. It's on the to-do list. (As soon as I come up with something resembling a punch line.) :)
