The Long Dark

I picked this Alpha (Pre-release) game up for $20 on Steam and I've been playing the guts out of it for a week now. It is currently only a sandbox for alpha testing as the devs improve things, but it is a solid release and quite playable.

You are the sole survivor of a plane crash caused by a geomagnetic storm. You find yourself in a bitterly cold snowy wasteland with few supplies and little winter wear. The geomagnetic storm has also turned the local wildlife aggressive and wolves / bears are a constant worry. The environment, night, snow, cold, wind, storms, all conspire against you. No maps, no compass, just your wits against the wild. You hunt, fish, gather, and search abandoned homes.

The goal is survival. You need to find water, food and shelter while keeping warm and collecting the items you need to exist. Exploration is a huge part of the game and there are multiple game maps to explore. There is no hand holding, you are dropped right into it. At the moment, the game is a sandbox survival mode only, but a story mode is planned and being developed.

They have sold 500,000 copies, it has excellent reviews and is quite enjoyable in my mind.
