The magical FSD

During interviews on the subject of Elite lore and science, Braben has often admitted that for a game on the scale of Elite to be playable, he had to cheat physics with the Frame Shift drive and faster than light travel.
So here is a video essay I made on the subject if any of you feel like juggling with abstract concepts.

The Aculbierre drive is the most common proposed model, especially for super cruise but actually, the model I present is different and slightly more original.
 
I would say that the science of the FSD in Elite is based on two things....

1) In system travel: The Aculbierre Drive
2) System to system Travel: Wormholes

With this said, I am not sure of what your goal with the OP is. Is it to create an understanding of the sci-fi nature of the FSD?

Yeah the goal is to speculate on how it works. On first inspection I would agree with the aculbierre and wormhole combo but I am skeptical about the fact that one device produces two vastly different effects.

The Frame Shift Drive is based on an astrophysical process called Frame-Dragging. Frame in this context does not mean “single image captured by your eyes”, it is the "a basic structure that underlies or supports a system" concept of frame. This “frame” is used in Special Relativity to determine the position of an object in regards to 4 variables: time and 3 coordinates in space and time. The frame-dragging refers to the fact that this frame affects space around it and space affects the frame, in essence dragging each other. This happens because space is elastic, and every particle exchanges energy with it, exerting force – but the catch is, the moment that force is removed, space returns to its original shape and energy state. While frame-dragging usually works only in massive objects big enough to generate a strong gravitational field, the FSD works by generating that same kind of effect artificially by shifting that frame around Spacetime, compressing space and moving it’s particles around by the same principle of frame-dragging. But instead of dragging space around with it and exchanging energy, it shifts energy around the frame, essentially moving things and particles around the ship while the ship itself stays intact. This huge ballet of cosmic energy swinging around is also responsible for sensors picking up ships in SC from far away – the compression bubble greatly increases gravitational effects, and the distortion can be picked up from far away just as easily as a planet’s gravity well.

This frameshifting bubble created by the FSD is what allows the ship to move so fast but also turn direction and reverse speed – the compression field works the same way all around you, shifting space around the ship. This ability to change course mid-flight and even reverse direction is the main indicative of the FSD being a different kind of tech than the ones currently known.

Disclaimer: This was written before the Alcubierre drive theory was adjusted to allow for moving around while at warp. At the time, the Alcubierre drive was a straight line only type of drive, and this highlights the difference between the old version of the theory and the way the FSD works.

interesting, the basis of my pseudo theory relies on space already being bent and folded as you go through special dimensions. I was inspired by the works of a group of French astrophysicists and mathematicians working on the idea that perhaps our universe is much smaller than we think. The reason for that would be that a lot of stellar bodies we see are duplicates caused by the fiber of space and time being bent and folded.
 
So... Basically the FSD works by moving space around the object, instead of moving the object through space? Sounds like a galactic sized nuke.

Wouldn't the sheer wake of such an event annihilate all matter?

Actually FD hasn't mentioned a single thing on how the FSD works yet. Everything else is just player speculations. The only clue given is "frame-shifting".
 
a fun thing about "nothing can move faster than the speed of light" is it is almost lawyer speech. it is nothing can move through space faster than light. well space is moving faster than light right now. funny thing it probably works like it does in futurama if you make a " high pressure" bubble of space behind the ship space will then move you not though it but around it. so you can then move faster than space as you are not moving through it.
