For many years, Rimor Captionem was regarded as the farthest black hole from Sol. But one aspect of this system that piqued my interest was that it's in G masscode. And I wondered "are there any other high mass systems around here?" So I typed "Oedgaf" into the GalMap and pressed enter...
A brand new black hole! And if it could be reached would edge out the last record-holder by 100 Lys. But why stop at Oedgaf? Some more GalMap searching yielded 27 G masscode systems across 12 different sectors that were not in EDSM.
Most of them were B or O-class stars, but 5 of them were Black Holes. After estimating some coordinates and calculating some distances I determined that 19 of the 27 systems (2 of the 5 black holes) could be reached with the aid of a fleet carrier. So I worked up enough credits to buy an FC with my alt (as my main FC is committed to the DSSA) and with some help from @SpaceTrash67 filled up the carrier with enough tritium to make the 60 thousand Ly journey out there and have some to spare. I am a proponent of sharing so I put out a call to get some volunteers from my squadron to come along for the ride. I'd like to thank @marx @CMDR Urania Minora and CMDR Durin Plane for coming along with me on this journey, it was an unforgettable experience.
As for the systems themselves, on their own, they ranged from mildly interesting to empty, but paired with the incredible views of the galaxy made every system a sight to behold. That first black hole, Oedgaf CL-Y g0, did turn out to be reachable.
We didn't end up putting everyone's name in this system, but it didn't matter because there's a second reachable black hole out here even farther than that!
So we began making our way to this other black hole, passing through some other high-mass systems on the way and I felt a pit in my stomach as I opened up the system of Pyritchi ZE-A g0 to find that it had already been tagged! Someone else must have taken a fleet carrier out here! We kept moving along, but the next 5 systems we visited were all tagged (although they were kind enough to leave the planets unmapped). We were one jump away from what's supposed to be our record-breaking black hole, and I was seriously worried that the record had been unknowingly snagged from us before we even got there. I scheduled the next jump anxiously waiting.
It was a huge wave of relief and joy to see that empty system map. This had been the culmination of about a month of calculating, planning, fueling, and jumping and it was immensly satisfying, and made even better because it was done in a group. I am incredibly grateful for the IGAU and I want to thank @CMDR Urania Minora again for cultivating an amazing community of explorers that are willing to come on journeys like these.
Right now, as I'm writing this, the [IGAU] Sublime is on its way back to the bubble where I plan to use it for Glorious HIPs work where she'll continue her journey of discovery. We don't have enough tritium to make it all the way back, but we brought mining equipment. I'll leave you all with some photos from the trip. Keep exploring, commanders!
