Ships The Mark I; no improvement necessary

The Faulcon DeLacy Sidewinder Mk.I
319 320 years and still going strong

Most pilots start their careers in the Sidewinder. It is a classic ship design that has been in use (in various configurations) since 2982. Its original design was a light support ship and it lacked jump capability. Modern compact drives have enabled jump-capable versions to be created, making this a useful all rounder. Some navies still use these ships as fighters and patrol craft.

I noticed a lack of Sidewinder thread here and so felt the sturdy old Sidewinder could do with a thread of her own, that doesn't call her a "Starter ship"

The Sidewinder has Served me will from the first days of the Premium Beta, through the Eranin Federation war, and even my first expedition out to the Pleiades Nebula before was any route planner let long one that plots the whole route out there for you in 3 seconds telling you the 26 easy jumps to make.

Even now I still favour the Sidewinder over the larger ships, the handling is second nature, the flexibility and utility to my play style are superb.
With the Combination of a Fixed & Turreted Beam Laser she can keep a poniard of hostility right in the face or power-plant of the enemy no matter which way either of you turn, and she has held her own Bounty hunting, in military action in conflict zones, solo or in a Wing.
She may not be the top at anything but when she gives all she has it can be enough in so many and varied situations and mission roles.

I present The Kererū

I've been running around in my Cobra doing random missions. But I'm planning on going back out exploring in my Sidewinder pretty soon. Sideways Across the Galaxy!

I am just in the process of increasing my funds, and didn't want to spend more than 1mio credits for a little bountyhunting on the side. So I bought a Sidewinder and equipped it like this. Went to a Nav beacon (no good RES near my current location) and had some luck, and made almost the full purchase price back in bounties in little more than an hour. Only downside I found with my setup was the small power distributor.

The Sidewinder definitely isn't a bad ship if you put good components on it. But of course bigger ships will still surpass it easily, even with medium components.

+1 to you Vasious.

I'm a little late to this thread, but wanted to chime in. My two favourite ships of ED are often talked down as 'starter ships': the Cobra and the Sidewinder. And yet to me they are the best ships in the game, and the only ones I currently own and plan to continue owning for the time being (one of each - I like to keep things simple and not spread my assets all over the galaxy). The bigger ships just don't do it for me. The Cobra has the best of everything for me, except handling, which is very good but not quite as much fun as a Sidewinder. Great fun hunting in the Sidewinder - while picking my fights very carefully. ;)

Another note on so-called 'starter' or 'beginner' ships: that's just a mindset, to me there's no such thing. While I have tried some of the bigger more expensive ships, there is no rule or requirement to progress to bigger more expensive ships as you play on - that frequently just leads to a 'grind' (I will not grind). Progressing to bigger ships is one way to play ED, and that's fine for some, but it's not the only way. Stick with the smaller ships, relax, earn credits slowly, and enjoy the game!

:)

Seeing others recognize the value of our 'starter' ships is refreshing. I've moved on to a cobra mkIII in the weeks since I've started, but I did so mainly to allow me more options for internals and hardpoints. In the end, it's really just a bigger, roomier Sidewinder. My only complaint with the Sidewinder is that it's really just a trapezoid. It's just...ugly to my eyes. The cobra isn't too different, but it feels more like a half-octagon than anything. I dunno. Ship design in E:D is pretty...unimpressive visually, at least to me.

Still, it's reassuring to know we're not ALL racing to break the bank with impossible income streams. Many safe jumps to ya, lad.

I am keen to see what we do once crafting comes in.
Not expecting miracles but the custom tuned ships everyone has in the fiction

A Further Tribue to the Sidewinder Mk.I as her role as a planetary scout

There is nothing quite as relaxing as gliding over the surface of some far off moon, in VR, with engines off bar the occassion RCS pulse.

Find a PoI on the scanner, skim down to have a look and deploy the Scarab SRV

One of my mid-term goals is to Engineer the bejesus out of an A-Rated Sidewinder, (christened Rosetinted Spectacle) and fly around leaping from system to system, striving to put right what might go wrong and wondering each time if the next jump should really be the jump home.

Finally Modded the Kereru to completion

The light weight Rail Gun has Feedback Cascade, and the light weight Beam Concordant Sequence
Clean Drives on the Enhanced Thrusters, to cope with over heating
The Power Plant is over charged
The Power Distributor is charge enhanced
The Frame shift Drive has enchanced range
The Life support is light weight and she has Enhanced performance low power shields.

Fianlly the Military composide hull and Hull reinforcements are heavy duty

With the Module storage, she can be outfitted for many a role from Exploration (Space and Surface) Combat, Mission running, and Passenger.

Green Sonoran Livery, Aqua weapons tinting, and a Scarab SRV in matching vibrant green
