Leaders Divided Over Government Structure as Talks Begin
Haven (Fairfax Legacy), 17 March 3311 – The first round of debates at the Marlinist Constitutional Convention has made one thing clear: while most representatives agree that the Marlinist Colonies need a stronger, more unified government, deep divisions remain over what form that should take.
Prime Consul Kayode Tau of the Free Marlinist Movement has been elected President of the Convention, tasked with facilitating debate and guiding the convention toward consensus as representatives from all eight Marlinist factions attempt to chart a path forward. Among the most vocal participants is Verity Dexter, representing the Marlinism Reformation Party, which has staked out a hardline stance in favor of restoring the old Republic of Achenar system rather than forming a new government.
Competing Visions for the Future
With the Marlinist Colonies now firmly established, there is broad agreement that the current decentralized system is unsustainable. However, factions remain divided on what shape the new government should take:
1. A Strong Central Government (Favored by larger factions and war-weary regions)
Advocates argue that without central coordination, the Marlinists remain vulnerable to external threats and economic instability. The Free Marlinists of Carinae, Marlinist Society of Nahuatl, and Marlinists of New Chana support this model, each for different reasons—economic stability, military security, and diplomatic strength.
Some smaller factions, like the Exiled Marlinist Assembly of Baltah’Sine and Free Marlinist Movement, also back this approach, having suffered the most in the Marlinist Survival War and fearing another prolonged conflict.
2. Decentralized Federation (Favored by smaller factions wary of past failures)
The Beatis Collective of Marlinists and Liberated Mazahuanese Marlinist League strongly oppose centralization, fearing it will repeat the mistakes of the original Republic of Achenar. They argue that a federation—where factions retain significant autonomy but work together in key areas—would better preserve Marlinist ideals while avoiding authoritarian drift.
3. Restoration of the Republic of Achenar (Proposed by the Marlinism Reformation Party)
The Marlinism Reformation Party insists that Marlinists are not building something new, but instead restoring the true government of the Empire in exile. They propose an exact recreation of the Republic of Achenar, complete with a Senate and Executive Council, rejecting any legitimacy of the Imperial government. Their long-term vision is the reformation of the Empire under republican rule, not permanent Marlinist separation.
A Struggle Between History and Necessity
The weight of history looms large over the debates. Many delegates fear that concentrating too much power in a central authority could lead to tyranny, just as it did in the past. The original Republic of Achenar relied too heavily on the altruism of Marlin Duval, and when she was assassinated, the system collapsed into imperial rule. Critics argue that any new government must have stronger safeguards to prevent history from repeating itself.
At the same time, the decentralized nature of the colonies has proven inefficient, especially in defense and economic matters. Without stronger coordination, some argue, the Marlinists will always be vulnerable to external threats and internal disunity.
Where the Debate Stands
While most factions appear to support some form of stronger centralization, they remain deeply divided on how it should be structured.
As negotiations continue, the question remains: can the Marlinists strike a balance between strength and liberty, or will the divisions of the past resurface once more?
