The Mech Thread

I agree, I'm not enjoying the 'mech' feeling in MW4 (I have the mektek gubbins).
MW3 was much better. Unfortunately, I can't get it, or pirate's moon running without severe graphic issues, which is a complete shame. MW3 actually runs slightly better than pirates moon, but the graphical issues are so bad, I can barely see in front of me. Lol I'll keep looking for a fix.

MW4 does just feel like a clunky bad FPS compared to MW3 Mech SIM feeling.
Lasers also feel more "meh" in MW4. More heat and less damage. The controls in MW4 doesn't seem as good either. I liked my mouse aim for the arms from MW3.

MW5 looks like it brings back the Mech feeling though. Looking forward to that. Roll on 2018. Lol

I've watched a few minutes of videos of MWO, and it looks dull. PvP Mech fights, over and over again. MWO with PvE would be amazing.
Imagine if MWO was more like ED, but with mechs, and obviously less space flying. Lol

I want to be incredibly hyped up about MW5 but it's coming out of PGI and while they've got different people working on it, I'm going to withhold my excitement until we see more out of it.

There is a four pack of MW1, MW2, MW3, and MW4 with the expansions floating around online that has been fixed up so that it all works like a charm on modern computers. I don't think you can run any mods on top of these games since they've been tweaked to run on new rigs but if MW3 is running like garbage for you regardless then it can't hurt! I wish I could remember the name of it but I found it pretty quickly while digging around for the MekTek MW4: Mercs release. It's still on my system at home so if I remember when I get back in a week (or if you can remind me!) I can look it up for you.

That'd be awesome, thanks!
I don't really run mods anyway.

I'll do some googlings for it.

MW3 and 4 just won't start at all on my PC!

Anyone else think that the MechWarrior games would actually be pretty good movies?
Assuming the curse of terrible video game movies doesn't strike. Lol

Edit, I think I found the quadrilogy. :D
Currently downloading now.

If anyone else would like it, PM me for a link as I think it would break the forum rules to post it here.
But you can't pirate something that's free and no longer available right?

If it's PGI im sceptical.

They probably just yank the models and maps from MWO and slap on a mission campaign with cutscenes and call it revolutionary.

From the videos from MWO and MW5, they do look a bit different.

In MW5 you can walk around without your Mech too by the looks of things. Plus the movement of mehcs in MW5 looks "heavy" where as MWO they run around like chickens. Lol

From the short gameplay clip, it does look quite good. :)

Edit:
Bah, after waiting 15 hours for the MechWarrior Quadrilogy to download, MW3 still doesn't work. Lol

I get totally messed up graphics that make playing impossible. I did manage to step on someone though. Or I think I did. :D

The same issue I get from other MW3 sources.
I'll keep trying. Not tried my main PC yet, but the idea was having some MW3 fun to play at work. Lol

Double edit:
I got it working! Yay!!!
And I'm at work! Double yay!

Turns out I just needed some .DLL files from a thing called "dgVoodoo2" put in the base MechWarrior 3 directory.
Works like a charm now. :)

Just need to go through all of the controls to be more "WASD" compliant than the current "use every possible key" system it currently has. Lol

Off to stomp some more now. :D

Hehe, I forgot how unbalanced MechWarrior 3 was.

By the 3rd mission, I had my Bushwhacker Mech, loaded with 5 Large ER Pulse Lasers, and 5 Double Heatsinks. I was pretty much able to fire my lasers continuously without shutting down. :p

Then I basically ran around alpha striking the other mechs in the leg. :D

It's funny the Bushwhacker is one of my favourite mechs, and it's also the one you start in. Lol

I still love it though, feels way more like a mech game than MechWarrior 4 does.

The great problem with all MW games including MWO is that they completely remove the "dark age" of technology of the lore.

- Tabletop had the pilot randomly hit an area of the mech facing them
- Damage spread out so combat took longer

In reality we should not have crosshairs but rather firing cones depending on weapon and targeting system but NEVER pinpoint weapons.

Not to mention the ease we had with monoboating everything.

I would not mind if the NEXT Mechwarrior game took the lack of tracking and targeting technology to heart and had weapons be highly inaccurate due to targeting system saying one thing and actual weapon tracking doing something else.

It's not only about fighting mechs, it's fighting the drawbacks of ones own mech as well.

EDIT: Or we should have a firing cone that got larger the further away an enemy was, depending on weapon and targeting used.

Jitter.
MechWarrior needs jitter.
Remove the cursed thing from ED, and apply it to MW. Lol

Was fond of Earthsiege and Heavy Gear 2.

Some mech-flavoured games (not sure they fit OP's criteria though):
- Titanfall 2 appears to be a great solo game
- Lost Planet 3 is nice, I like the ability to leave the mech to explore on foot
- What about Brigador?
- I have yet to try an Armored Core game
- Hawken was lovely, feeling was great. But it should have deserved a solo campaign

That's, actually a genius idea.

- Jitter based on movement speed
- Jitter based on target range
- Jitter based on targeting system
- Jitter based on weapon system

Having a crosshair that jumps, and shudders as we move and cannot really stand still would actually reward a good twitch shooter with timing their shots right.

It's a shame there's no real job for people who come up with ideas like that.
It seems to be all I'm good at. Lol

Worse, apparently the MWO devs are against jitter because it removes skill...

Funny, i thought making it HARDER to hit a specific location would require MORE skill in handling speed, target movement, check range etc.

In a mech game you could have jitter for each footstep time your shot between steps and it's more accurate, stand still for accuracy (and to be a sitting duck).

Maybe FD should buy out Piranha. It'd be RNG galore then. :p

I don't understand why people would be against jitter or reduced accuracy when moving, shooting or being shot... It's pretty much in every FPS ever. Crosshairs spread the faster you move, and shrink the more steady you are.

I'm still downloading MWO.
49.4%.

It might be done by the time I no longer want to try it. Lol

It doesn't help that Paul Inouye is a complete and utter hack and is somehow responsible for game balance yet doesn't even play the game. Combined with the MWO forum dads that accept everything PGI does as a great idea and it's no coincidence that anyone that truly cared about having a great MechWarrior game has left.

I'm absolutely salivating at the upcoming release of the Civil War era tech cause that is gonna have nuts in it. PGI trying to balance RACs? Oh yeah, my popcorn is ready.

I remember the debacle of them changing Machine guns to being utterly useless against mechs unless their armour was destroyed first.

Suddenly 20-30 mm armour piercing rounds could not penetrate the ABLATIVE armour of mechs, making SEVERAL light mechs next to useless.

And people argued that "machine guns" as in .50 caliber weapons could not work against vehicles. I mean, just trying to explain that we are talking about 20-30 mm rounds similar to a vulcan cannon on an A-10 did not get into peoples heads.

Lol I have a feeling I'm going to get owned when this finally downloads...

(9 hours to go!)

Either that, or my internet will cause so much lag, I'll get booted from all the games. Lol

I'll probably just play MW3 some more. :D

Armour piercing rounds should always work on armour.
The clue is in the name. :p

I have a feeling I'm not going to enjoy MWO. You might even see me on their forums campaigning for sanity. Lol

I gave up after a year.

- They had the core boardgame for a guide.
- Each turn is 10 seconds
- All damage is over 10 seconds
- So, all weapons in the game now have a DPS value directly from the core rules

Instead they took the weapon damages, added different fire rates and kept the base armour of mechs.

Then they had to rebalance all mech armours since monoboating instantly shot off legs and sniped away parts with ease unlike the boardgame where the very lore explains the poor targeting systems so one COULD NOT pinpoint specific parts.

Sounds like it's been CODificated.. lol

I'm powering through MW3, because I just have 8 EL Lasers on my Thor, and a million double heatsinks. And I just trot on by sniping the legs off everything. Lol

Well, I finally downloaded MWO.

It's definitely a pure Free 2 Play / Pay 2 Win game. Lol

I'm stuck with the basic unconfigurable Mechs, unless I buy money to buy mechs.

LRMs + Scout mechs seem to be the bane of MWO.
Each game I had looked like a firework show, with LRMs streaking across the sky constantly from behind cover, while scout mechs targeted from general safety.

I picked the Medium Nova Mech, 6 lasers, 3 AMSs, and I mostly went after the scout mechs, due to the lack of punch to take on anything bigger, and the AMS kept most of the wall of missiles off my back. Only bagged two kills in 6 matches, but loads of assists and component kills. Not bad for a rookie. :p
And yes, I died in most of them. :D

Team play is quite good, and coordination is generally ok, although some team members just try to push you out of the way, which just damages you both, which is silly. Lol

I haven't done the main part of the game yet, just quick matches. All in all, not as bad as I was expecting.
Although, I'd rather it was a proper game like ED, with optional store items.

I personally think a MechWarrior version of ED, with Online PvE and PvP, and all that thrown in, would be excellent, and way better than the Micro Transaction Team Deathmatch Game it is.
But then I'm a big fan of cooperative PvE than competitive PvP.
